Chapter 7

Finding Rest in an Anti-Sabbath World

“Rest provides fine-tuning for hearing God’s message amidst the static of life.”

Shelly Miller, Rhythms of Rest

Recently I decided to take an afternoon reprieve from looking at my phone, just like the mental health experts recommend. I’d become increasingly and compulsively glued to it, and after feeling convicted about the amount of time I spend on it (shout-out to my iPhone’s no-nonsense weekly screen report), I decided it was time to take a brief technology hiatus. To avoid temptation, I put my phone in the basement, closed the door, and focused on other things for a few hours. I’ll admit, I was a little bit proud of myself for resisting multiple urges to go in and sneak a peek to see if I’d missed anything.

When I finally returned to grab it, I had a text from a comedian friend who had to drop out of an upcoming show and needed someone to replace him. It had been a slow work month for me, and the honorarium of this show would’ve covered a good portion of my bills. Unfortunately, because I hadn’t responded in a timely fashion (within a couple of hours), the show went to someone else. My little technology Sabbath cost me meaningful, life-sustaining work.

Kristin, this is a really depressing way to start a chapter.

I know, but I promise I’ll circle back to this and leave you with a happy ending.
