Learn to look away

To rid yourself of the damage the Demon can do, you need to learn how to redirect your attention away from pain and misery and focus instead on things that are good, kind, generous, loving, beautiful, or sweet.

To help you with this, I want to introduce you to Epictetus, a Greek Stoic philosopher who lived over 2,000 years ago. He was born into slavery and his early life was full of suffering. However, he took what he was given and focused on living the best life he could. What was his secret? He understood that although we can’t control the world around us, we can control how we respond to it. In other words, the secret to happiness is to control your thoughts, redirecting your attention away from pain and misery and focusing instead on something positive. So you see, my advice has a greater authority behind it than you might have imagined.

In order to control your mind, you’re going to need to create some high-stimulation competition for that oh-so-stimulating Demon. You need to choose something that will grab you and draw you in.

Tricks of the trade

Make a list of high-stimulation activities to close down the Demon that suit you. Write it down, keep it on your person, and use it whenever the Demon breaks into your mind.
