Chapter 14
As she went to Mrs. Overtonâs office, Beth Anne had a flashback of first meeting Mark there a few weeks ago, when heâd caught her reading that e-mail. Sheâd been snooping. And now she wished like the dickens she hadnât read it. Thatâd teach her to be so nosy!
Her inquisitive nature meant she wanted to know who was doing this and she still did, but now she was motivated by more than simple curiosity. Finding the bag had shaken her to the core! Itâd brought back memories of her own terrifying bout with addiction and how sheâd nearly lost her own life and almost left her children motherless. She was lucky she wasnât living in a vegetative state or dead altogether.
And now she knew for sure someone out there was truly addicted just as she had been! Someone was dangerously using and might quit breathing and die at any moment! The addict probably drove a vehicle and cared for patients! This person needed help right away!
Beth Anne steeled herself and rapped on the frame of Mrs. Overtonâs open door. The woman sat at her desk, by herself, thank goodness.
âBeth Anne, is everything all right?â she said, looking up as Beth Anne rushed in.
âNo,â Beth Anne replied, closing the door behind her. âI found this today.â There was no point in making small talk. Beth Anne wanted to get this conversation over with.
Beth Anne approached Mrs. Overtonâs desk and leaned over it, opening the bag.
The woman peered into it. Her eyes widened. She gasped and her already wan complexion paled even more.
âSit down, Beth Anne. Tell me how you came into possession of this.â
Mrs. Overton flattened her wrinkled, lipstick caked mouth into a grim line and clenched her wrinkled hands into fists, her knuckles turning white. Mrs. Overton, like Beth Anne, faced the stark truth that there really was an addict in their midst. It wasnât just conjecture any more.
Beth Anne sat down at a chair facing Mrs. Overton. Her hands trembled as she placed the bag on the desk, taking care not to spill its contaminated contents. It was a relief not to hold that bag anymore. She wiped her sweaty palms on the legs of her scrubs.
âI found it in my patientâs room about an hour ago. It was hidden in the corner behind the trash can. I came to you as soon as I could find someone to relieve me.â
Mrs. Overton sat back in her chair, considering the situation. Beth Anne watched her run things over in her mind. Mrs. Overton didnât like controversy. She wanted to believe all nurses were saint-like individuals who cared for their patients above all else. But Beth Anne knew first-hand that nurses were just as likely as anyone else to fall prey to addictions, cravings, greed, jealousy and any other wicked human trait.
âDo you have any idea who might have left it there?â
âNone. But we have to determine who it is. Someone who works here needs help! And soon! Before this person gets hurt or worse.
