The inner aggregate function, min, finds the least effectiveness score of the countermeasure selected for one individual step in the attack path, (s i, s i+1), with respect to the vulnerabilities of the destination service in that step, . The intuition behind using the min function is that the countermeasure is as effective as it can prevent exploiting all vulnerabilities and configuration weaknesses of the destination. The outer aggregate function, max, evaluates the resistance of all the countermeasures in the consecutive steps, not only one step, and takes the maximum resistance among them. That’s because preventing exploits at any step in the path is enough to eliminate the threat imposed by that path. In other words, one highly effective countermeasure at one step of the attack path shadows the other less effective countermeasures at the other steps.
