Even in the extreme case of Japan, a simple focus on structural diversification and allocating portfolio dollars in a more well-conceived manner would have been the difference between virtually no gains (as was the case with buying and holding the Nikkei) and nearly doubling your money (via the Simplified Permanent Portfolio). Needless to say, the difference is impressive and results in a significantly better outcome than the numbers suggest due to declining prices throughout this entire period.

Even more importantly perhaps, the more diversified Permanent Portfolio resulted in a substantial reduction in the number of sleepless nights.
