Chapter 17 - A Date with Death

Inside The Roundabout Lodge, Adaline had brushed off the incident with the wyvern for a good ten minutes or so. She happened to have sleeping powders in her pocket, and somehow they had worked. On a dragon. A giant, poisonous dragon.

The lie sounded so lame she felt sure her cover would be blown.

However, Adaline’s tremendous ‘luck’ seemed to be accepted by the small crowd of captivated villagers who were universally grateful to have been kept safe from the seemingly infamous wyvern. Laverty continued to look at her with curiosity and wonder, as though he didn’t want to believe the story, which she completely understood as it was ludicrous. He also seemed to be totally comfortable just gawping at her, and she wasn’t used to this type of adoration - especially as he was super good-looking. Did he find her attractive? There’s no time to be self-conscious, she told herself.

She felt a strange warmth around her neck, but it was not Caelum. The small silver charm necklace she shared with Violet was burning hot, sending her mind spiralling. Could it be a sign? If it was, was Violet alive? A pang of hope swelled in her stomach, and she smiled, clasping the charm in case her friend could sense her.

‘So, are you going to have a drink? You’ve just had quite a scare,’ smiled Laverty once they had finally managed to escape the crowd and sit down. He pushed a tankard of ale towards his new friend and Adaline looked at the drink in front of her. It looked like beer, and she decided not to question it. Taking a sip, the bitter taste hit her and she tried to hide her grimace, nodding appreciatively. She could really do with a lemonade now.

‘Thank you. That’s… better.’

Laverty continued to stare at her, smiling. He reached to gently pull a stray hair from her eyes, moving it to the side of her face, but Adaline batted his hand away defensively. He held his hands up and away from her apologetically, and her face flushed.

‘Sorry.’

‘No, it’s me. I just hate my ears.’

‘Why’d you hate your ears?

‘It’s nothing.’

‘They look like regular humbodhian ears to me. Not too big, not too small, nice and sharp.’ Laverty pulled his long hair away from his face, revealing pointed, elf-like ears, just like her own. She laughed to herself, as Laverty looked on, confused. ‘Mine are funny?’

Adaline smiled. ‘Hilarious.’

The Roundabout Lodge was so named as it was circular, with a central bar and kitchen area that served the surrounding room. It was a convivial atmosphere, with humbodhians, forevermores and one or two other creatures serving the customers; flagons of ale and wooden plates of steaming food passing above the chattering heads. The place was busy with talk of wyverns and of Adaline herself, although all were fairly convinced by her story of drugging the dragon. Still, eyes kept clocking hers, so she decided to return friendly smiles to all that looked over, in spite of the fact she would have felt far more comfortable without the attention.
