Chapter 7
DISCERNMENT
D iscernment is one of the nine gifts of the Spirit, and itâs one that can come with the ability to see.
Discerning of spirits simply means to discern the spiritual nature and state of anything, whether good, evil, or neutral; whether itâs from the spirit realm or even from a human. So, you can discern the condition of a person, or what is present in any given environment, or even yourself and the sources of thoughts and feelings that come to you.
Before we discuss discerning different things, letâs talk about how to handle seemingly negative discernment.
Negative Versus Positive
Jane Hamon often says that it doesnât take discernment to find something wrong. In fact, itâs easy to find things that are wrong. The best person at finding, in addition to fabricating, what is wrong is satan. He is the accuser of believers. 1 So being able to know whatâs wrong isnât necessarily a function of any of the gifts of the Spirit, as it could as much be a function of listening to the accusations of satan against other believers, or even against ourselves.
On the contrary, to discern in its highest purpose is to discern the good. Jesus said I only do what I see my Father in Heaven doing. 2 Jesus had to actually be able to see what God was doing! He had to be able to do this by discerning, sensing, hearing, seeing. What God was doing was good. God also revealed to Jesus the plans of the enemy, since Jesus knew that Judas was going to betray him, but the plans of the enemy did not motivate Jesusâ actions. The plans of God did.
The gift of discernment, just like the gift of prophecy, can cause us to see in the spirit. It should cause us to see what God is doing and what He wants to do. It could also cause us to know what angels are doing, what aspects of Godâs nature are manifesting in a room, what the Holy Spirit is doing among the people in the room, what Godâs purpose is, and so forth.
So what should you do if you discern something negative? Follow the example of Elijah. Ask God to show you His side of the storyâHis purpose, what Heâs doing, His angels, and His presence.
Discerning People
We can discern what is going on with people, what spirit they are operating in, what source their behavior or words may be coming from, or simply their condition. If we do discern such things about people, it is to serve them and build them up.
One of the most powerful reasons to discern people is to approach them the way Jesus would approach them. The Bible says a bruised reed he will not break and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. 3
Rebecca Here
One time in Bible college I went to hear a speaker who was visiting our school. He was young and charismatic, and kind of a funny guy. I knew him casually through some acquaintances but didnât know much about him.
