An hour later I’m guiding Jordan’s Porsche into the driveway of Harper’s brownstone with a burner phone in my pocket. I practically had to shake myself out of a state of shock when he’d tossed me the keys. My body is ready to drop just from lifting my arm to knock on the door. It swings open, revealing my best friend still in her pyjamas, only half awake. She opens her mouth, probably to curse me out for waking me up before she actually sees me. She stops abruptly, absorbing my appearance.

“Scarlett, what the fuck?” She tugs me into the house by one of my sleeves, peering over my shoulder. “What the hell happened to you? Who’s car is that?”

“For starter’s, my entire life just fell apart.” I begin, flopping on to her L-shaped couch because I don’t know how much longer I can stand up. I don’t even have enough energy to cry.

Harper perches on the cushion by my feet, tossing the throw blanket over me. “Tell me what’s going on.”

I spend the next half an hour detailing the events of the last twenty-four hours. Explaining everything from the fake text inviting me to Preston’s, catching Theo cheating, his fight with Jordan and my assault. Her face falls further every step of the way until it’s contorted in anger. I don’t tell her about Jordan being a stalker or his involvement with killing Michael. It feels wrong to keep the truth from her, knowing I’m only doing it to protect Jordan until I figure everything out.

“You need to call the police. Now.” She reaches for her phone. “Theo’s a fucking trafficker.”

I sit up so fast my head spins. “Not yet!”

She arches a brow, obviously disapproving. “Scarlett. At least report the abuse.”

“I will, when I’m ready.” I let myself fall back against the couch. “I’m sorry. I haven’t slept and I just need time. That’s all I’m asking for. He’ll get what’s coming to him.”

That’s the truth. While I don’t condone murder, I do know Theo isn’t going to get away with attacking me or leading a criminal double life.

“I always knew that fucker—“ Harper cuts herself short. “Sorry. I’m here for you. You can go up to the guest bedroom.”

Practically dragging myself off the couch, I open my arms and give her a droopy hug. “Thank you. I owe you.”

“Don’t talk stupid. You don’t owe me shit, Scar.”

The guest bedroom reflects Harper’s personality, walls painted in a deep sage green and decorated with various artworks. I tug back the comforter and collapse face-first into the soft flannel sheets, white with little green leaves. Infrequent drops of rain begin to tap against the windows. I’d better enjoy the rest while I can before everything implodes.
