CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Jesse

It's raining, and I'm standing near the edge of a familiar cliff.

This is where I grew up.

I look around and I see my family home in the background. It's been a while since I went home, but even as I want my feet to turn, they refuse to move. There's a figure sitting on the edge of the cliff, in the rain, and I know who it is, without seeing her face.

"Taylor?"

I approach her, and when she looks over her shoulder, her eyes are red blood, the same color they were when she had gone against the members of the Black Wreath Organization. But her expression is distraught, and I can't help but sit down next to her, "Why're you here?"

"I don't know," she murmurs, her voice filled with a heaviness that isn't like her. "I'm so close to finding Dad, but I'm so scared."

Her father? Why is she looking for her father?

"I thought you were stashed somewhere safe?" I frown, forgetting for a moment that this is nothing more than a dream.

"I was," she looks in the direction of the churning ocean, "but then I found a lead about where my father could be and I decided to go look for him. Dolores did try to stop me, but I needed to know. Isabel and I left together."

I sit down next to her, "So why're you scared?"

She just watches the ocean, as the waves rise to almost frightening heights, "Will he think of me as a monster?"

"No, he won't," I say, abruptly, watching as the raindrops trickle down the side of her face, lingering on the tip of her nose, clinging to her lashes. She looks beautiful, as always an ethereal beauty.

"You're not a monster," I raise my hand to cover her eyes, "neither like this."

I remove my hand, revealing her red eyes, "nor like this. You're just Taylor."

Her lips press together into a thin line, "When did you become so good with your words?"

"I've always been a ladies man," I wink at her.

The rain lessens, slowing down to a soft drizzle.

"I miss you," she admits, slowly. "We're on the road again and it sucks. And what with this new development-"

Her expression changes, and she lifts her head as if sniffing the air.

"What development?"

But she doesn't answer, her expression contorting, as she hisses, "Crap! They've found us. I have to go. I have to wake Isabel up!"

Alarm fills me, "Wait, Taylor-"

But when I blink, she's gone, and it's just me, sitting on the edge of the cliff.

What just happened?
