Fixing What Isnât Broken
â Emma Hopwood
Emma Hopwood is a 17-year-old American student dedicated to agricultural sciences and literature. She raises awareness for the queer community through videos, writing, and art.
Welcome! Welcome to planet Earth!
Welcome to the home of countless species, including the beautiful, amazing, stupendous human race!
Now, if you look to your right, youâll see a wild teenager. These homo sapiens are famous for their daring nature. But, more importantly, at this stage they develop something thatâs crucial to survive on this planetâthe desire to have sex.
This thing called sex, itâs so important that some species bite off the head of their partner afterward, because itâs not about the love, is it? Itâs. All. About. Sex. Because the meaning of life is reproduction. Thereâs an unwritten agreement that if you exist, you must pass on your genes. If not ... well, hereâs some news for you. You are a freak.
Well, I suppose I should introduce myself, then. You can call me an asexual. Quite simply, I donât want to do any of that sexual nonsense. Just cuddles and conversations over tea.
Not that Iâm holding back at all.
If I had a choice, I would honestly rather go to my fridge and eat some cake rather than have someone stick their tongue down my throat.
And no, I am not a freak.
But ...
well
people think I am...
and sometimes so do I.
...
It was never an issue. Until one by one my friends were picked off by princes and women in white ... I smiled for them, but a part of me began to catch fire. Itâs not that I longed for a relationshipâI was angry.
Angry enough to yell at my reflection. To ask her what made her broken, why she couldnât feel. Why she gave a damn in the first place.
Tentatively, I reached out to others with manic questions, begging for an explanation.
You need to try it first.
But thatâs the thing. The thought of it bores me. If you were asked to write a book on making a sandwich, would you want to? No? How do you know if you havenât tried?
Too young?
Look around. Just. Look. Around.
I can fix your problem ...
Back off.
Itâs no surprise that I felt broken, considering I was surrounded by horny teens, naked ladies on TV, and sex-saturated magazines.
And I know some of these things wonât change. But awareness can. And perhaps if we teach people that asexuality isnât fake ...
... well, maybe theyâll stop trying to fix what isnât really broken.
