Fixing What Isn’t Broken

— Emma Hopwood

Emma Hopwood is a 17-year-old American student dedicated to agricultural sciences and literature. She raises awareness for the queer community through videos, writing, and art.

Welcome! Welcome to planet Earth!

Welcome to the home of countless species, including the beautiful, amazing, stupendous human race!

Now, if you look to your right, you’ll see a wild teenager. These homo sapiens are famous for their daring nature. But, more importantly, at this stage they develop something that’s crucial to survive on this planet—the desire to have sex.

This thing called sex, it’s so important that some species bite off the head of their partner afterward, because it’s not about the love, is it? It’s. All. About. Sex. Because the meaning of life is reproduction. There’s an unwritten agreement that if you exist, you must pass on your genes. If not ... well, here’s some news for you. You are a freak.

Well, I suppose I should introduce myself, then. You can call me an asexual. Quite simply, I don’t want to do any of that sexual nonsense. Just cuddles and conversations over tea.

Not that I’m holding back at all.

If I had a choice, I would honestly rather go to my fridge and eat some cake rather than have someone stick their tongue down my throat.

And no, I am not a freak.

But ...

well

people think I am...

and sometimes so do I.

...

It was never an issue. Until one by one my friends were picked off by princes and women in white ... I smiled for them, but a part of me began to catch fire. It’s not that I longed for a relationship—I was angry.

Angry enough to yell at my reflection. To ask her what made her broken, why she couldn’t feel. Why she gave a damn in the first place.

Tentatively, I reached out to others with manic questions, begging for an explanation.

You need to try it first.

But that’s the thing. The thought of it bores me. If you were asked to write a book on making a sandwich, would you want to? No? How do you know if you haven’t tried?

Too young?

Look around. Just. Look. Around.

I can fix your problem ...

Back off.

It’s no surprise that I felt broken, considering I was surrounded by horny teens, naked ladies on TV, and sex-saturated magazines.

And I know some of these things won’t change. But awareness can. And perhaps if we teach people that asexuality isn’t fake ...

... well, maybe they’ll stop trying to fix what isn’t really broken.
