Chapter 13

We step into the building, the men at the entrance opening the doors for us, but not even looking our way as we step awkwardly through the doorway.

The entrance is gorgeous and decked out in gold over every surface possible. A counter with a security guard is to the left of the entrance. He has his feet propped on the desk, his hat is pulled down low. He glances at us but says nothing as we make our way to the elevator. My guess is these people aren’t paid enough to care about rich people’s business.

Regina hits the button to call the elevator down to us. As we wait, I feel dread in my stomach. Something isn’t right. We’re walking into a trap, or is it just my nerves of the unknown that makes me hesitate? I push my feelings down inside, not discrediting them, but I need to focus on what is in front of me.

We board the elevator; the doors closing behind us. Regina reaches out, pressing the button to take us to the fifth floor. I check my various weapons, one hand still wrapped around Gina’s side. Satisfied that all of my weapons are ready and easily accessible, I push Regina behind me, in between me and Felicity.

Regina starts to protest, when I turn my gaze to her and she closes her mouth quickly, looking down at the floor. Beatrix stands next to Gina, her weapons at a ready. Third floor dings as we pass it, then the fourth.

Regina gasps and her barrier drops. “He knows we are here!”

“What the fuck?” I ask her.

“There was another trap we entered between fourth and fifth floor. It was already too late for me to do anything when we reached it.” Regina gives me a look that says she’s sorry she didn’t see it coming.

I kiss her gently, the floor bell dinging as the doors slowly slide open. “Stay here.” I tell her, giving her a look, that says how much I really mean it.

She nods and I turn to the floor in front of me. Grabbing my knives in both of my hands, I step out of the elevator. Regina pulls the emergency stop button on the elevator, ensuring it will stay put while we move forward. I nod at the other women. Felicity is already holding fire in her right hand. Beatrix has one of her many weapons palmed.

I lead the way, feeling the magic pour over me. I push my way through the barriers to the doorway in the middle of the long hallway. I turn and kick into the door, pushing my magic behind it to ensure it flies off its hinges. The apartment is enormous. Many rooms can be seen from the entryway. Open floor space allows for a quick search with my eyes. I step inside and look to the right finding the kitchen. To my left stands an open living room, windows lining the walls looking out over the city.

There, in the middle of the room, is my soul.
