Chapter Five—Mia

When she got home, Mia slunk into her room, too depressed to talk to anyone. She’d been so looking forward to meeting with Artur only to be stood up. She should’ve known better than to trust that someone like him would want to be with her. Likely he just wanted to be polite after the first date, but, of course, this was a colder way to go about it. She lay her head heavily on the pillow, her whole body feeling deflated. He hadn’t even read her messages. Maybe he’d lost his phone or something. But in that case, wouldn’t he show up anyway?

She lay in a rather depressed huddle for some time before her sister gently coaxed her out of the room with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and the promise of watching something cool on television.

“I’m sure he must’ve had a good reason for not showing up,” Natalia said. “He’s not the kind of guy who would do something like this, I’m sure, so be patient. Perhaps everything will turn out okay in the end.”

“I’m an idiot,” Mia mumbled. “I really thought he liked me.”

“Did you listen to anything I just said?”

“Sorry, what did you say?”

“Oh, Mia…” Natalia enveloped her in a big hug. “Let’s just watch something, you silly goose.”

Mia suspected she must look like utter crap. Certainly, she felt like utter crap, so it was only appropriate that her outside matched her insides. But distracting herself with food and bad TV only helped a little because her heart felt so heavy. All she wanted to do was disappear into the sofa forever, as if falling into a black hole. Natalia obviously understood and did her best to console her, but there was just so much she could do.

“I should watch the Notebook or something,” Mia sighed and her sister snorted.

“Girl, we are not going to be depressing you more, so get out with your Notebook vibes. Only cheerful stuff for us. Feel-good family stuff is the way to go.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Mia resigned herself to watching slightly more happy movies, just for the benefit of her sister, although what she really wanted was something that’d make her feel even more miserable.

After six, when it was dark, she heard a series of knocks on the front door. Natalia went to answer it and she let out a little yelp of surprise when seeing who was there.

“Hello, Natalia,” came a familiar, low male voice. “Is Mia in?”

Mia sunk a little deeper into the sofa, and put away her ice cream. Instantly, she started straightening her hair, fully aware she looked horrible and puffy-eyed.

“I see you’ve brought an apology,” Natalia mused out loud. “I’m letting you in, but you better have a good reason for standing up my sister and not bothering to answer any of her messages.”

“I’m not sure if there is a good reason, but I can try to explain.”

Natalia hustled over to Mia. “Lord, you don’t look good at all.”

“Can you delay him? Let me go and get dressed.
