Despite the news that Iâd caused another death, life went on. We continued training every week, learning magic every day. I didnât think I had it in me to be nervous about the guard trials, but it turned out, even my feelings of guilt werenât strong enough to keep it at bay.
We stood on the front lawn early Saturday morning as Juliana directed us.
âOkay, guards, come receive your menteesâ missions. Weâll send you through one at a time.â
Viviane turned to me and gripped my hand. âYouâll pass. We both will.â She turned to give Cole a grin. He shot her a thumbs up. I glanced at Nate, who was pale and muttering to himself. Viviane leaned over me to pat him on the back. âSee you on the other side.â
If anything, he turned paler as his mentor walked up to him, a slip of paper in her hand. âLetâs go. Weâre first in line.â
She whisked him away.
One by one, Juliana created a portal for each pair. When I stepped up, she gave me a wry smile.
âYouâve proven yourself before, despite my best attempts. Donât fail me now.â
I nodded as I stepped through the portal and tumbled into another world. It was pitch black. Warren appeared behind me with a grunt, hitting the back of my spine with his chest. My body lurched forward. With one hand, he steadied me.
As my eyes adjusted, I realized it was a warehouse of sorts, but empty. The type of place that as a kid youâd yell in just to hear your echo, half afraid that when it returned, it would sound like someone else. Yellowing light from the outside lampposts was the only source of illumination.
âWhatâs my mission?â
Warren was taking in the space. How often had he been in the mortal world? Heâd gone to the park, tracking down that guy the day weâd met, but judging by the apprehension on his face, he didnât spend that much time here. Or⦠I swallowed. He didnât like what we were about to do.
He had the paper pinched in his grip, but folded so I couldnât read, even if the space had been lit enough. When my fingers brushed against his, he seemed to snap out of whatever trance heâd been in.
âWeâre to track down the source of sinister magic in the building.â
I pressed my palms against my pants. Okay, find the sinister magic. I could do that. Though we hadnât exactly gone over tracking or anything. Viviane said it was a puzzle. So maybe that was the trick, being smart enough to find it?
The area we were in was tall and empty. On the far wall was a row of large metal rolling doors. My sneakers scraped the dirty floor, grinding in years of dust and dirt as I turned a full 180. There were two regular doors. One, I could tell from the window above it, led outside. The other was a pair of metal double doors.
As I squinted, I could make out the tiniest scuff in the dirt.
