FIADONESSA

23

Fia kept running, and she didn’t stop. Fynn tried to keep up, but she knew his body was still reeling from the events. Nika held him from the other side as they kept going. The town was close by, only a mile away based on the wooden signs lining the pathway through the forest. As they drew closer, the dense woods thinned out, replaced with dirt pathways. Soon those became cobblestones, filled with other people, all hurrying toward their own destinations. Small outdoor gas lamps full of fire lined the streets, meant to heat up the masses in this icy kingdom.

Fia walked to the nearest inn and pulled her hood up. The sound of laughter burst forth as she pushed open the door to find various inn regulars taking in ale and good company. The night was alive, but Fynn couldn’t go on any longer. Fia went up to the counter, approaching the middle-aged woman working there. She looked up, pushing a handful of her short cropped hair from her strong-jawed face.

“Hello? May I inquire for a room,” Fia said.

“That depends,” the woman said, in a surprisingly gruff tone. She eyed Fynn hanging limply between them. “How many has this one had? I don’t want to be cleaning up puke from my good carpets.”

“He’s…” Fia looked awkwardly toward Nika.

“He has an iron constitution,” Nika provided. “There won’t be any cleaning necessary, we swear.”

“Alright then,” the woman said. “How many rooms do you want?”

Fia hesitated. She knew Fynn was legally still her husband, but she couldn’t find herself alone with him.

“Anything for three people?”

The inn mistress raised an eyebrow, looking between the three of them. “Together?”

“Separate beds,” Fia said, hastily.

The woman shrugged, as though the thought of multiple people sharing one bed was typical to her. Fia couldn’t help but ponder those implications. What kind of establishment had they chosen?

“We only have one room available with two big beds.”

Fia nodded. It was perfect. The innkeeper tossed the keys on the counter, and they dragged Fynn up the stairs. Fia looked at the number embossed on the brass key fob.

Three.

She would need to drag this man three flights. Nika was a puffed out mess before getting to the last step.

“I am entirely out of shape.”

Fia smiled. “I think we both are.”

They laughed, dropping Fynn on one of the beds. Fia pulled the covers over him. Fynn was muttering incomprehensibly as he tossed beneath the sheets.

“Thank you,” Fia whispered to her friend.

“You are welcome,” Nika said.

Fia quickly prepared for bed, wrapping the spare pillowcase from Fynn’s bed around her curls. She would have preferred her usual sleep bonnet, but in a pinch, this worked. She unhooked her necklace and placed it on the bedside table. Afterward, her and Nika both tossed themselves into the other bed and lay next to one another with the covers up, trying to speak in hushed voices.

“What are we going to do?” Nika turned to face her in the dark, propping herself up on one elbow.

“I do not know,” Fia admitted.
