Chapter 9

(Sophie)

“You won’t believe what Ryan’s mother said about me.” Bridge exclaims.

After measuring the cinnamon into the stand mixer, I turn my attention to my visibly shaken friend. “Oh no. She’s not in town yet and already upsetting you? That’s not a good sign.”

Bracing her hands on the island, she glares at me. “That woman said I seem kind of flighty, too much like a free bird and can’t imagine us ever getting serious.”

I can’t help giggling. “Well, it sounds like she’s living in the dark ages if you ask me. There’s nothing wrong with being a free bird. I think it’s a more peaceful existence myself. But then again, I guess if the shoe fits.”

“How am I supposed to face her after those comments?”

“So you talked to her on the phone? She’s pretty bold saying that when she hasn’t even met you.”

Bridgette huffs. “No, we haven’t talked yet. I heard her on Ryan’s phone—she was on speaker. And after those comments, I don’t know if I want to.”

“I sure hope he stood up for you. If not, he and I need to have a talk.”

“Not in so many words. He told her not to judge me until we meet and until she has a chance to get to know me better.”

Joining her at the island, I pat her arm. “I think it’ll all work out in the end. Some mothers have a hard time letting another woman into their son’s lives, especially when they’ve never been married. They feel like they’re being replaced.”

As we scoop the batter I made into the cups, she says, “Maybe you’re right. You have a good point.”

“Just give it some time and don’t judge her either until you meet.” I grin and she sticks her tongue out twisting her face.

Once the lunch rush is under control, I join Liam for a bite to eat at my favorite place in the cafe. Setting our plates on the table in the reading nook I sit beside him.

Things have been less strained between us since he returned, which eases my mind. Our wedding plans are in full swing though we still don’t have a venue. I told him if need be I’ll close the cafe and we’ll have it here, but he didn’t like the idea.

“Thanks baby.” He unwraps the silverware.

I squeeze his hand and see him taking a deep breath. “How are you feeling? You look tired.”

Liam focuses on his plate. “I think the lack of activity is taking its toll on my lungs —I’ve been a bit tired lately.”

“Maybe you’re overdoing it at work.”

“I’m not. All I do is sit or stand near the register and ring people up or go into the office and tap on the computer. I don’t have the strength or lung capacity to lift anything.”

Looking at him, his skin is shiny and clammy. “I’m going to call the doctor and see if he’ll see you. You don’t look like yourself. I’ll feel better if he looks you over.”

After making an appointment for late this afternoon, I convince him to let me take him home to get a nap.
