With two exercise sessions at the recreation center in the morning, and ukulele lessons at the rest home in the afternoon, Gabby was grateful her schedule was full. She desperately needed something to occupy her thoughts and her time.

Taking a sip of water from her drink bottle, she glimpsed Phoebe through the windows of the gym. She glanced at her watch – there were still a few minutes before the next class. Placing her drink bottle on the bench, she hurried in through the glass doors and waved to Phoebe.

Phoebe slowed the elliptical machine to a stop and wiped her face on a towel.

“I wanted to thank you for telling me about Ashton the other day.” Gabby leaned one arm on the neighboring machine. In all that had occurred over the weekend, she had almost forgotten the angst Phoebe’s revelation had induced.

“No problem.” Phoebe took a swig of water from her stainless-steel drink bottle. “How is he? How’s everything going?”

“Ashton’s fine.” I hope. “But …” She was about to mention everything else was not fine but held her tongue. Phoebe wasn’t someone she knew overly well, and Gabby didn’t want to burden her with her marriage woes. “How’s everything with you?” Small talk. She could do that – if it meant preserving her dignity and keeping her humiliation to herself.

“I’m great thanks. Today’s my day off, so I thought I’d sneak in a quick gym session before running the rest of my errands.”

Gabby noticed movement out on the pool deck as the participants for her next class arrived. Grateful for an excuse to leave, she smiled at Phoebe. “Don’t let me hold you up! Days off are precious commodities.” She glanced through the window separating the gym and the pool area. “I better go and get ready for my next class. They look harmless enough, but boy, those elderly folk give me a hard time!”

The women laughed, and Phoebe gave a small wave as Gabby jogged through the gym, back to the pool deck for her final session of the morning.
