Inevitably Julia got the whole of the Thornton story out of me. She’d been hurt when I showed no enthusiasm for having her in Craftley. I’d had to ‘unhurt’ her by giving my reasons for not wanting her around. After that she’d told me to remember our engagement, and announced her intention of sharing my troubles as a fiancée as she would in future as my wife. We embraced with solemnity – a thing we’d never done before – and the final result was that Julia arrived back on Monday complete with more luggage than the roof of the Bubble could stand. But with the help of Tiger’s Daimler sports car I got her installed at Craftley Manor.

I had to admit to myself that Julia had taken me by surprise. I’d expected her to disapprove of Thornton’s ‘crime’ and I’d even been prepared to defend my hesitation in handing him over to the authorities. Instead, Julia, despite her claims to having more sense than I, strongly supported me. She agreed it would be ‘horrid’ to hand over a farmer who was so fond of his cows. She agreed that it wasn’t Thornton who should pay the penalty for breaking the law, but Sidney Franks. Sidney would have to be stopped from leading other farmers astray and probably causing foot-and-mouth disasters all over the country.

I had to see Thornton and I had to make Thornton realise that Sidney could not be allowed to continue his new line of ‘business’.

It was an interview I didn’t relish. Though I’d meant to tackle it on Monday I was almost glad of the trouble with Julia’s luggage, because by the time we got up to the gun metal and purple guest room it was too late for me to call on Thornton.

On the following day, when I was visiting farms on Renton’s lists, I was too tired. Besides, Thornton was busy. I saw him shovelling gravel from a truck into the ditch of Conny’s piggery.
