Caro

Filming resumed the next day, and Posy and Rosalind were on the first revised call sheet up at Tŷ Gwyn. Anton and his ADs had been frantically reworking the schedule to figure out which scenes they could film without Kit, and without a body double for Keira’s last few appearances, which thankfully were minor and didn’t involve lines.

Kit’s absence was more of a problem, and Anton had seemed genuinely pleased about Caro’s presence for the first time when she’d told him, the night before, that she might have found the evidence they needed to prove his innocence – as long as Anton was happy to stand as his alibi after he returned to the Seven Stars. Anton had agreed enthusiastically.

On another movie, Caro might have expected production to shut down for a couple of weeks after such a tragedy. But with everything that had delayed the making of this film so far, she wasn’t all that surprised that Anton was ploughing on regardless.

Before they headed up to Tŷ Gwyn, the Dahlias snagged Seren and took her with them, handing her over to one of Anton’s ADs, Harriet, as an unpaid intern. Caro didn’t think she’d ever seen anyone so excited not to get paid.

They’d talked over what Jack had said the night before, but everyone had been too tired to make much progress. Now, Caro intended to get them back on subject.

‘Okay, so we’re not actually giving up on this investigation, right?’ Caro swung her legs as she sat on the counter in the hair and makeup trailer, while Rosalind was aged up into an older version of herself as Hermione, and Posy was given pin curls and red lipstick to transform her into Dahlia.

‘No. Of course not.’ Rosalind’s smile in the mirror didn’t quite reach her eyes, though.

‘I just can’t believe it wasn’t enough.’ Posy stared down at the coffee cup in her hands as the hairdresser fussed with her curls. ‘We proved he couldn’t have done it, and it still wasn’t enough.’

‘It might be yet. Kit could be back here with us before you know it.’ Caro nudged Rosalind and waggled her eyebrows to suggest she should also say something encouraging.

Instead, Rosalind said, ‘Jack had a point.’

‘Rosalind!’ Caro groaned, as Posy looked up, furious.

‘Oh, not about Kit.’ Rosalind waved a hand to clear their objections. ‘That someone might be trying to frame him. It seems clear that it was Kit’s car that was used to kill Keira, which means that if Kit didn’t do it, someone else must have.’ She didn’t add ‘someone on the cast’, but Caro knew they were all thinking it.

‘And if we can find out who, that would definitely clear him,’ Caro noted.

Posy had abandoned her coffee cup and was already scribbling down a list of names, much to the annoyance of the hairdresser trying to pin the waves of her hair.

‘Better add Kit on there too – just for completeness,’ Caro said.

Scowling, Posy wrote, Kit, then put down her pen. ‘That’s everybody.’

Except it wasn’t, quite.
