A day later, White awoke. He broke through the cocoon of syek, to find the others gathered around him. Niang, Otto, No-Mark, One-Word. Even Blythe was hovering just outside the door frame, his fluorescent glow illuminating the room.

“Here he is! Happy Ascension, Chalky!” said Otto. “If you’d told me, I would have made a special dinner.”

White stared at the pieces of broken syek cocoon on the floor, their color completely drained. It took a few moments for everything to fall into place in his mind.

I’m Adept. I made it. I actually made it to Adept.

The rush of adrenaline in his head was so strong he felt like he could faint.

Niang stepped forward and took his paws in his own. “I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of you, White-Snout. For any Student to reach Adept is an important milestone. For a mouse to reach one? You have made me and your friends proud.”

White felt like he could actually cry. I’m so pathetic. He thought about Tinkering, but he stopped himself. He wasn’t going to go through life dulling every inconvenient emotion. He would only do it when he really needed to.

This meant he had to deal with his emotions like every other self-respecting guy.

“I, uh, just need to get something from that room over there.”

“What? I’ll fetch it for you,” said Otto.

“No, it’s, uh, something only I can…won’t be long.”

Alone in the sleeping room of the house, White sat on the floor. To pull himself together, he checked his vitals.
