HARRY

“You see, honey,” says Dad, as the Carrs’ gate swooshes closed behind us. “That’s how these little trips usually go.”

Darryl nods encouragingly from beside me, and I think Carol musters a smile, but I can’t see her face well from the back seat. “Is this…a good fence?”

Dad grins. “Yeah, it’s even newer than ours. Maurice owns a rich spread and likes new stuff.”

Isn’t that the truth! Royce and Bentley and their little sisters get some awesome presents each Christmas. Though…I glance at Darryl…not even they have anything like a quadravian.

“You’re not going to drive around it?” Carol’s noticed that we’re heading straight on down the drive.

“What, the fence? Aw, no, honey. That would be really rude.”

“So…we just trust it’s okay?”

“That’s right, honey. You can’t surv…live out here by yourself; you live by trusting each other. Like you trusted the SPARK Brigade when you lived in-city.”

“Oh…” Carol’s been trusting someone as far as fences are concerned her whole life, but clearly didn’t realize!

We pull to a halt in the Carrs’ perfect white gravel yard and get out, leaving the rifles in the truck, which Dad locks carefully since the youngest little sister is only five. Darryl has Kiko on her shoulder, where he likes to hang out most of the time. The small leash running from his ankle ring to a loop on her jacket is only a precaution, in this unfamiliar place. He already seems to think my big sis is the best thing since electricity—or at least since Missie.

A cat streaks across the yard, making Carol jump. But when Royce’s tough old piranha’saur comes tearing after it, Carol screams full out. The piranha’saur stops dead, draws itself up to its full twelve inches—mostly neck and legs—tilts its tiny head back and stares up at her. Its head cocks to one side…

“Don’t you even think about it,” says Dad. “I will boot you clear over the fence.”

The piranha’saur screeches rudely and races off after the cowardly cat. Why couldn’t that kitten Father Ben picked for Darryl have grown up into a cat like that? Kiko stares after the tiny carni’saur in an aloof manner, as though knowing he has nothing to fear. Piranha’saurs really are pack hunters and with their itsy-bitsy mouths they can barely kill anything bigger than a mouse by themselves.

“What?” Carol’s shaking. “What was it thinking about?”

It was thinking about having a taste. But for once I manage not to blurt that out loud. Kiko, with his beautiful feathers, impeccable manners and tendency to stay wherever Darryl is has caused Carol little stress, but a snappy, featherless piranha’saur fails on all three counts. Hasn’t Carol seen one before? I suppose city-folk don’t let them outside, and she probably doesn’t know many families with young boys. Even in cities kids are more likely to have a dog or something, anyway.

“How did it even get in here?” stammers Carol. “I thought you said the fence—”

“It’s just a pet,” Darryl says. “It’s supposed to be in here.”

“They can be a little snappy,” Dad warns her.
