Luke was eating dinner when it happened. He hadn’t been great about regular eating in the game’s wake, but every day it got a little easier to force some food into his body. He’d even treated himself to a shot of vodka with his macaroni. The empty alcohol bottle had joined a host of others in the trash, covered with newspaper so that Raven wouldn’t see.

Now Raven stood at the foot of the stairs with a suitcase in her hand. Luke was surprised it had not only taken her this long to leave, but that she’d even stopped to say goodbye to him.

Bleary-eyed, he raised his head and looked at her. “Where will you go?”

“Somewhere you won’t find me,” she said. “I’m getting a new phone and everything. Don’t bother trying to contact me. If I see you again, I’ll call the police.”

The Tricker-Treater had worked his magic, so that Kendra had never existed. The only people in the world who remembered that she had lived under the same roof, though not for too much longer.

“You can’t tell them anything,” Luke challenged her. “You don’t have proof.”

Raven glanced at the front door. “I could make you pay, you know. I could call him, too.”

A chill rippled through Luke’s body, cutting through the alcohol. He lowered his voice, his tone going deadly. “Raven, you can’t do that. You’ve seen what he can do, how he can get to people. Get inside their heads and make them do unbelievable things.”

“Wouldn’t you call him again?” she demanded. “Couldn’t you ask him to make our lives better?”

Grief and guilt dug their claws into Luke’s heart. “No. I don’t deserve that.”

But he knew she had a point.

“You’re going, then?” Luke asked. “There’s nothing I can do?”

“You’ve done enough,” she said. Those were her last words to him.

Raven picked her suitcase up and turned her back on her father. An acute pain flared in Luke’s chest, but he didn’t stop her from walking out on him.

The front door shut behind her. The house filled with silence.

Luke took a deep breath. He put his hand on the table, palm facing up. The scar was still fresh. Gingerly, he probed it with his index finger.

Then he picked up his knife and reopened the cut.
