ŚANDOR HAD PLENTY OF paperwork waiting for him when he got into the station, so he didn’t get a chance to call Fitzroy until around suppertime. Despite the work and the drills he had his team run through, his mind never strayed far from Bianca and the problem with her ex. Bianca gave off an odd combination of denial and deep fear, and he’d been relieved when she agreed to let him talk to Fitzroy. Not that he needed to. Alex was already patrolling the woods outside her home on Fitzroy’s orders. But if she ever caught sight of him—unlikely, given his wolf form—she’d know it was because of Śandor mentioning it to the lieutenant.

He glanced out at the setting sun as he dialed Fitzroy’s number.

“Captain. Good to hear from you. What’s going on?” The man always sounded so calm and grounded when Śandor called. Must be because he’s a Morukai.

“I went out to lunch with Bianca Pearce today. She got some news from her kid-adult about her ex.” Śandor tried not to growl, but just the thought of someone making her uneasy curdled his stomach.

“Oh? Has there been a new development?”

“Maybe.” Śandor rubbed the back of his head. “It’s unclear. Her oldest kid called to let her know they can’t find their father. He wasn’t at work or at home, and no one seems to know exactly where he went. While that wouldn’t normally be an issue, her kid seemed to think the man flew off the handle a bit when he found out she sold her house and moved.”

“Did her kid say anything about their dad coming here to Cloudburst?”

Śandor rubbed the back of his neck. “Not that I’m aware of, and she didn’t say that, but there’s something more going on than just an impromptu vacation. Bianca’s nervous and worried. She said she didn’t think he’d come looking for her since they’ve been apart for six years. But my gut is screaming it isn’t that simple.”

“Why are you calling me instead of her?” Fitzroy didn’t sound angry just curious.

“She didn’t want to bother you with gut feelings, and she seemed to think her ex wouldn’t bother to seek her out. But I convinced her to let me call you and give you a heads-up. I also mentioned that you might put a man on her house just to keep an eye on things in case she ever caught sight of MacLaren.”

Fitzroy chuckled. “Smart man. That’s a CYA if I’ve ever heard one. Are you going to keep an eye on her place, too?”

“Yup, as soon as I get off shift. Besides, I need to reconnect with and reconnoiter that part of the forest anyway. I get off around ten tonight, so I’ll head over there and take a look around.”

“Good. I’ll brief MacLaren, but keep this in mind. The guy might not even come here. If he does, he might not head into the forest. Does anyone know what the guy’s driving or his plate number?”

“Not that she’s mentioned.
