Chapter 24:

Questioned by the Sixth Knight Brigade Captain

“SPEAK? About what?” Quentin was the first to open his mouth, eyeing Zackary dubiously. Then, as if looking back on a fond memory, his expression changed to one of ecstasy. “Unless—do you want to talk about the Black Dragon King? Of course you do! Ohhh, how divine! I still can’t fathom how dragons can evolve to reach such levels of heavenly beauty! Surely, you understand?! The Black Dragon King’s presence alone makes one want to kneel to it! Its being is absolute perf—”

“Enough!” Zackary interrupted Quentin’s creepy, trembling rant. “You obviously don’t have a clue what I’m getting at! Fia. Talk!”

Ugh, was he really going to go on about this again? “I know what you’re trying to say, but you’re definitely wrong!”

“Oh, really? After everything that happened earlier, you’re still expecting me to believe that you’re not involved with him?!” Zackary narrowed his eyes. The veins of his folded arms bulged.

“Come on! Stop exaggerating!”

“Exaggerating?!” He frowned. “You were talking like you were an old friend of his!”

“Huh?! Friend?! I’ve never even met that buff bald instructor of yours!” I exclaimed.

His arms fell to his sides, and he gave me a shocked look. “Wait—what in the world are you talking about?!”

I raised my voice, exasperated. “It’s that buff bald instructor you can’t stop talking about! Look at my hair—and I mean really look at it! Do I look bald to you?! Not even my father Dolph is balding yet! Nobody in my family is balding! Drop it, okay? I’m nothing like him!”

Zackary looked at me blankly for a few moments. Cleared his throat. Pulled himself together a little. “I see. So you’re both idiots who don’t understand the severity of the situation…and sit up straight!” he roared.

Quentin and I sat up properly at once, backs straight and hands on our knees.

I gasped. Of course, how had I forgotten something so important?

“What’s wrong, Fia?” Zackary asked.

I grabbed his collar, panicking. “C-Captain Zackary! A-am I still losing it?!”

“What?”

“Wh-what you said earlier!” I exclaimed. “Th-the hallucinations and stuff?! Oh! That must be how you mistook me for some buff bald guy! Wow, hallucinations are pretty crazy, huh…”

“Okay, stop! I never once said you looked like a buff bald guy, and you missed the whole point of me bringing up hallucinations!” He sighed wearily. “Aren’t I supposed to be asking the questions? Quentin, you get it, right? You explain.”

A frown crossed Quentin’s face for a moment, then disappeared. “What Zackary is trying to tell you,” he said calmly, “is that he would like to worship you as his goddess after discovering you are the master of the all-powerful and magnificent Black Dragon King.”

“Like hell!” Zackary broke in. “What happened to you, Quentin?! You used to be one of our best knights! Maybe the Commander was right. Anyone who gets involved with Fia goes weird…”

“Objection!” I shouted. “Captain Quentin’s been weird as long as I’ve known him! How is this my fault?!”

“Ha ha ha!” Quentin cackled. “It’s an honor
