This Sunday feels drastically different than the others. As I walk with Piper and Sadie to the dining hall, Iâmâ¦content. Happy would be an overstatement, and Iâd be lying if I didnât say things were far from perfect, but today Iâm okay. Iâm trying to focus on the good, even when it's hard to do so.
Much to Piper and Sadieâs dismay, Iâve done as Reid asked and kept the more personal details of our night by the lake to myself. I would like to be able to tell them about it. Iâm looking forward to being able to. But I donât want to put any information out there that could hurt Reid during his fatherâs visit.
âGood morning, ladies,â Joel greets us as we approach the student services building. Heâs alone, which is unusual.
âWhere are the other two?â Piper asks, breezing past him for the door. Something important Iâve learned about Piperâdonât get between her and food when sheâs hungry.
âI knocked on Quinnâs door, but he didnât answer. Reid said heâd meet us.â The simple use of his name makes my insides flutter.
Piper waves us to follow her inside, and we shuffle to the dining hall line. She doesnât hesitate, picking up a tray and hurrying down the counter like a child in a candy store. Itâs adorable how excited she is as she gazes at all of her options, deciding on a stack of chocolate chip pancakes taller than her head. Paired with scrambled eggs and a large coffee, Iâm convinced the girl will be wired for the rest of the weekend.
I choose something less elaborate, deciding on a few slices of toast and a small bowl of fruit. We purchase our meals and head back to the picnic area behind the dorms.
Sadie and Joel sit across from Piper and me, Piper immediately digging into her sky-high tower of pancakes.
âDid you have a good time with bat boy last night?â Joel asks, plopping a whole hard-boiled egg into his mouth.
Sadie rolls her eyes, shoving him playfully in the side. âStop calling him that.â
Before Joel can retort, I jump in. âDo vampires actually become bats?â Three sets of eyes stare at me, and Iâm convinced Sadieâs jaw is inches from hitting the floor. Itâs comical to witness, the shock that spreads across their faces. âHe told me. The six-foot vampire in the room has been conquered.â
âIâm sorry we didnât tell you. Reid doesnât typically care, but he specifically asked us not to,â Sadie replies. âAnd to answer your question, no. Vampires do not turn into bats. At least nobody here does.â
âYou had fun on your date, then?â Joel inquires.
âIt wasnât a date.â Another echoes my words, and I turn to find Reid standing behind us.
Reidâs expression is nearly impossible to make out when he rounds the table, taking the open spot beside Joel and across from me. He takes his glasses off, placing them on the table. His eyes are red again, and Iâm sure itâs because of the blood that got on his hands last night.
