I was in such an oblivion that I almost bumped into a girl searching for something on the trail. She seemed kind of sad and lost. I approached her, ringing my bicycle bell.

“Hey! What are you doing here? It’s not safe to crouch on the bike trail.”

“Um, hi! Sorry!” she moved aside. She was about my age.

“Are you looking for something?”

“Oh, I locked my bike outside my grandma’s bakery. And . . .”

“Let me guess. You lost your key?”

“Yep. I can’t find it anywhere! I really need my bike.”

“Sorry to hear that. But, hey! Jump on the carrier, I’ll give you a ride!” I yelled out to her. “I’ll cut off the lock. I have a pair of bolt cutters. And I have a spare lock on me. You can have it if you want.” I always carried a spare lock in my backpack, just in case.

She turned around, smiling. “Thanks! Thanks a bunch, I’m gonna need it.” She looked grateful. You could tell she missed her bike.

“By the way, I’m Henriette.”

“I’m Lara. I’m visiting my . . . grandma . . . Agatha.”

“I’m sure my grandma knows yours. She knows everyone in this town!”

She jumped on the back of the bike, and we rode to the bakery together.

“Funny, I also lost something yesterday,” I mumbled.

“Really? What did you lose?”

“My watch has disappeared. I searched the entire treehouse and the yard through and through, but found nothing. Gonna look for it again today.” I stubbornly believed I would find the watch.

I think Henriette picked up on my frustration. “I’m sure it will turn up. Want some help searching for it? The more eyes, the better, right?”

“Thanks, Henriette! I’m sure it’s somewhere in the grass. Where else can it be, right?” I said as we pulled into the bakery yard. It was a new bakery; I didn’t see it last summer.

“Would you like to try my grandma’s pancakes? I could ask Grandma to pack some for you!”

“Aww, thanks, that’s so sweet of you! But I really have to hurry now.”

“Are you sure? The pancakes are to die for . . . with lots of sugar, vanilla, butter . . . and delicious stuffings! Grandma says her pancakes used to glue the family to the table and everyone who is lucky to take a bite feels happier.”

I licked my lips, imagining Henriette’s grandma’s pancakes.

“I’ll definitely visit your bakery next time to try the pancakes! I’ll take my granny with me, too! Thanks, Henriette!”

Henriette grinned from cheek to cheek.

I cut the lock off Henriette’s bike and gave her my spare lock. For a second I sensed the familiar aroma of Grandpa Ian’s cologne in the air.

“Thanks, Lara! You are the best. Come on over!” said Henriette.

“Yeah, I will! See you! And keep an eye on the key next time!”
