Chapter Three

For Brett, the rest of the evening went by in a pleasant enough blur. He conversed, snacked, drank quite a few glasses of the delicious mulled wine and told himself he’d made the right choice in coming up to the cabin after all. Otherwise, he’d be roaming around his LA apartment, trying to find a TV channel worth watching, eating leftovers or going to the corner deli for a turkey sandwich. This was better, much better, and the people were nice, very nice.

He closed his eyes then opened them quickly and smiled at Devyn as the man plopped down on the couch beside him. Even through the slight fog the mulled wine wrapped his brain in, Brett could see Devyn was a very attractive man. He’d removed the ski cap he’d worn earlier, revealing the kind of thick, dark brown hair Brett would love to run his hands through.

“Sorry,” Devyn said. “Bunch of regulars I had to say hi to. You having a good time?” Brett nodded happily, and Devyn chuckled. “No more mulled wine for you, I’m thinking, or you might forget you invited me over for a nightcap later.”

“Not forgetting. Just remembering I have to thank my brother Billy when I see him day after Christmas.”

“Oh yeah, what for?”

“For telling me I should come up here anyways, despite what that creep Jamie did, and then…” Brett paused. “Well, I can’t tell you what else he said.”

“Yes, you can.”

“No, it would be crass, and I don’t know you well enough yet to be crass.” Brett giggled then clapped his hand over his mouth, his eyes sparkling like a mischievous boy’s.

“I think…” Devyn stood and held out his hand to Brett, “that I should walk you to your cabin while you can still walk. ‘Course, I could carry you, but that might raise a few eyebrows around here.”

“You sayin’ I’m drunk?”

“Close. Now come on, ups-a-daisy, and let’s go.”

Grumbling, Brett took Devyn’s hand and let himself be hauled to his feet. “Oops,” he muttered, swaying a little. “You might be right.”

Devyn tucked a hand under Brett’s elbow and steered him in the direction of the door.

“You leaving?” Daniel stared at them.

“I’m drunk,” Brett said, “and this nice man is gonna walk me home.”

“Make sure you stay nice, mister,” Daniel said through a grin. “I don’t want to have to deal with complaints in the morning.”

“There won’t be any complaints,” Devyn assured him.

“Defnitlee no complaints,” Brett said, swaying towards Daniel.

“Let’s go, Tiger.” The brothers rolled their eyes at one another then Devyn led Brett through the door and out into the cold night air. “You have the key handy?”

“Back pocket,” Brett mumbled.

“’Kay, not getting fresh here…” Devyn slipped his hand inside Brett’s back pocket, his fingers caressing Brett’s butt as he fished for the keys.

“Feels like you’re gettin’ fresh,” Brett said. “Kinda nice, though.”

“Oh boy. Why’d you have to get so drunk?” Devyn chuckled then looked up at the starlit night. “Look how beautiful all that is up there.”

Brett craned his neck to look up, almost falling on his ass in the process.
