Zhee crouched in the algae pool by the shack. She ducked her hands beneath the slimy surface to the water beneath. She scrubbed her body, needing to get clean. This water was undrinkable, poisoned by the non-glowing pond scum, but it was still cleaner than those foul cannibals.

Their words still echoed through her mind. Their desire to rape her and eat her had her stomach churning. If it wasn’t for Emmait coming to her rescue . . . He’d swooped in, saved her, and didn’t even ask for anything.

Like Ablisio, she thought as she scooped up cleanish water from beneath the scum and rubbed at her breast where the cannibal had groped her. She feverishly cleansed herself, wanting to erase every trace that they had touched her body. Her stomach churned.

Zhee knelt in the pool, her knees sinking into the scum. She batted away the worst of the algae and plunged her hands into the depression she made. She scooped up the water and splashed it across her face, mouth and eyes sealed shut. Her hands worked over her body, wanting to rid herself of every bit of their touch.

I’m alive, she thought. Hope’s alive and I can return to Ablisio. Emmait protected me.

She still shuddered as she tried to forget this encounter by focusing on the good. If Emmait lived to the east of them, and since he was like Ablisio, it made it even safer for her to venture into those neighborhoods and collect from the latrines. She didn’t have to worry about cannibals or others moving around.

Did she have a new friend in Emmait? That eased her disgust as she washed away those cannibals. She scrubbed away the awful memories of today like she had done with the worst of the memories she had of her past. Of what those bastards had done to her before Ablisio had killed them and saved her. The cannibals couldn’t hurt her again. They did not matter. She grew calmer with every breath as she splashed more water over her body.

“Zhee?”

Amiollea’s voice drifted out of the dark.

“What are you doing?” she asked. “Are you in a pool?”

“I found a fresh latrine,” Zhee said. “Just getting it off of me.”

“I can understand that,” said Amiollea.

“How’d it go with Maej?” Zhee asked. No one needed to know what happened. Ablisio would only worry. Amiollea might even feel guilty.
