Malach spent the following day with Ginny. She picked him up at home that Saturday morning and they drove to Rogerâs house. She listened wide-eyed as he recounted the day.
âThatâs so much money. Itâs ridiculous,â Ginny said. âItâs totally ridiculous.â
âIt sure is,â Malach said. âI never, ever imagined that Roger had that much money. He never bought stuff. He fixed things that were broken instead of throwing them away. There was nothing pretentious about him. He never tried to impress anyone. He was probably the richest person around, and it didnât control his life.â
âI think thatâs great,â Ginny said. âItâs just amazing that someone could be so grounded with that kind of wealth. I hate all the attention to consumption that we have in our face every day. Itâs all we hear about.â
âThat was Roger,â Malach said. âHe understood what was important.â
âSo true, but itâs all yours now. What are you going to do?â Ginny said with a smirk. âJet off to the French Riviera to sail on your new yacht, hobnob at cocktail parties with Beverly Hills celebs on Malibu Beach, plan luncheons with the venture capitalists on Wall Street all vying for your moneyâ¦?â
Malach and Ginny burst out laughing. They were silly with laughter. She hopped up on the hood of her car, wrapped her legs around Malach who leaned back and she put her arms around him and rested her chin on his shoulder. They both looked at the house. The clapboards were faded and peeling, the walkway paving stones uneven and buckled. It was an old rambling house, probably more stately when it was built years ago by Rogerâs grandfather. The garage large enough for two cars, the shed looked to be built years later largely for storage.
âSo, this is your new spread,â Ginny said. âI suppose it will be fine with a proper make-over.â
âLetâs take a look,â Malach said.
She slipped off the car and they walked around the house and entered through the back door that Malach knew did not have a lock on it. The house was unchanged from when he spent days with Roger during his last summer there. Malach picked up a frame on the fireplace mantel with a picture of Roger as a young man with his wife and young son. He had not noticed it before. Roger had a big smile on his face with his arm around Edie, holding Lee in his other arm. Malach placed it back on the mantel.
âThey were really young there,â Ginny said. There was another picture of Roger posed with his parents, all of them dressed for church or a wedding or something.
âReally young,â Malach said.
âHe looked a lot like his father,â Ginny said.
Malach looked at the picture carefully and agreed. They poked around for a little while longer and then headed back outside. Malach opened the garage door where Rogerâs green pickup truck was parked. They stepped back out and he pulled the garage door shut. Malach suggested they take a short hike. He wanted to show her some of the property.
