“Wait!” Joe cried. “Can we ask you some questions?”

Wilmer shrugged. “Sure,” he said.

Frank and Joe told Wilmer and his bandmates why they were there, including everything that had happened at Paul’s party and what they knew about the Battle of the Bands. The band members were sympathetic, but they didn’t seem to know anything.

“I feel terrible for this young man,” Wilmer said, “but I’d never heard of Crush until we got the list of bands playing in the battle. We have a bass guitar in Geezers with Accordions, but it’s played by my friend Clyde over there, and he’s had it longer than you kids have been alive.”

Joe looked over at Clyde, a tall, skinny African American gentleman. “I’d be more than happy to let this young boy borrow it so he can play in the battle,” Clyde said. “Just tell him to find me after our set.”

Joe nodded. “I’ll do that,” he said. “But he’s pretty attached to Lucy.”

Wilmer nodded. “I’m pretty attached to my Lucy too,” he said. “Anyhow, we don’t much care about winning the Battle of the Bands. We just love to play for an audience. So we thank you, boys.”

Joe looked at his brother and smiled.

“Thanks for letting us listen,” Frank said.

Joe felt about a million times better than he had on the bus. But as he and Frank headed out to catch another bus home, he knew they were no closer to solving the mystery of what had happened to Lucy than they’d been that morning.
