After the private jet with Simion, Aleesha and Sonja took off, Cyn strapped into the jump seat of the Templar chopper, checked Rohan was ready to go in the rear seat—his expression remained stony—and gave the okay for her pilot to take off too.

They lifted into the air, and she tightened her arm around R-104C. A Tree. Her priority responsibility was a freaking plant, with olive-green leaves and a deep, rich bark interspersed with knots and gnarls.

Cyn’s cell pinged with an incoming message from Gray, and she typed back a fast confirmation that she’d be at Isadora’s property within ninety minutes.

Isadora’s sister-in-law Eve was there, which was perfect. Between Eve and Cyn, they should have enough magic to set strong wards to keep R-104C secure while Cyn worked out the details for its ongoing protection.

Because right now, R-104C’s safety—and therefore mitigating the danger posed if it fell into the wrong hands—was all that mattered.

The fact that a hellbeast had gotten so close made her blood ice over. Why had they gone after Simion twice? And if it was Forneous, which seemed the most likely option, how had he found them?

Rohan tapped on Cyn’s shoulder, and his clipped voice came through the headset, icy enough to freeze hellfire. “How long to Brisbane?”

“One hour. We can’t land in the CBD, but can get you close. I’ll organize transport for you to get to the gate. Car or motorbike?”

“Bike.”

“Can do.” Cyn tapped out another instruction on her cell. “Done. A contact will meet you when we land with the keys.”

“Wow. You Templars snap your fingers, and bam, everyone does as you order.”

“When we’re saving humankind’s asses, yes.”

“Keep telling yourself that, princess—sorry, High Priestess. What’s one more lie?”

She ground her teeth to keep from snapping back. Yes, she’d lied, and the fact was, she’d do it all over again. But right now, there was zero usefulness in fighting with Rohan—she had plans to put in place.

“After we drop you off, I’m heading to a farm outside a country town called Maleny,” Cyn said. “It’s a ninety-minute drive north of Brisbane. I’ll keep you posted if I have to move.”

“I’ll message you when I know what’s going on.”

“Just make sure nothing follows you. The frankincense can’t be at risk.”

“Anything coming through for my key?” Rohan asked.

“Not yet, but that’s not surprising given everything that’s happened.”

“Frigging hell.”

“I know your key’s important. And I’ll continue searching for it once I’ve made sure the frankincense is safe.”

“Fine. Look after your bonsai tree; I’m not stopping you. But if I don’t get that key, your frankincense—hell, everything in your world—is at risk because those hellbeasts will keep coming through. And what you’ve seen is just a speck of dust in the number of beasts that exist outside your world.”

“Then I’ll try a spell now while we’re en-route to Brisbane.”

“And if you can’t find it?”

“Rohan, I made a binding contract, and I’ll continue to search for your key—but this frankincense comes first.”

“Why? What’s so bloody important about that bonsai tree?”

“You wouldn’t understand.
