Patient Ratio
W hen I served in an interim educator role, new preceptors always had one burning question, “Rachel, How do I safely increase my orientee’s patient load throughout orientation?” This might be the very reason you purchased this book, and I want to make an important disclaimer before we jump into the heart of the matter.
Not.Every.Orientee.Is.The.Same.
There, I said it. We all learn in different ways, and each of us has a unique response to the structure of nursing orientation. There are some new nurses that just get it and fly solo pretty early on. Others are just over there on Week 10 of orientation afraid to put one foot in front of the other. It is important to recognize this and to adjust accordingly. There is no reason to keep someone at two patients on Week 3 of orientation when she is truly ready to advance to taking three.
For the purposes of this chapter, we are going to assume the nurse:patient ratio is 5:1 on a high-acuity medical floor and orientation is 10 weeks long. If you are working within a different specialty or have a different length of orientation, try to adjust the numbers accordingly.
