âWhat a relief,â said Mr Hobson, when they told him the story. âI was starting to worry that heâd put you into a stew with the rabbit!â
Jasmine stroked Clover, who was sitting on her lap. She seemed none the worse for her adventures.
âThank you for looking after Dandelion,â she said.
âI enjoyed it,â said Mr Hobson. âWe had a nice chat, didnât we, Dandelion?â
To Jasmineâs shock, Clover suddenly sprang off her lap and lolloped across the room.
âCome back, Clover,â said Jasmine, holding out a sprig of parsley. But Clover showed no interest in the food. Jasmine picked up the towel to drop over her, but as she drew closer, the rabbit skittered under the bed.
Mr Hobson laughed. âSheâs a lively little thing, isnât she? I think sheâs got a taste for freedom.â
Jasmine peered under the bed and gasped in horror. âClover, no!â she exclaimed. âStop it! Oh, no, I canât reach her.â
âWhatâs she doing?â asked Mr Hobson, as Tom looked under the bed too.
âChewing electric wires!â cried Jasmine. âStop it, Clover, youâll electrocute yourself!â
But Clover carried on happily munching the plastic-coated lead of Mr Hobsonâs bedside lamp.
âWeâll have to move the bed,â said Tom. They pulled the bed away from the wall and Jasmine threw herself across it and grabbed the rabbit. Clover squealed and kicked, but Jasmine kept a firm hold of her.
âOpen the carrier, quick,â she said.
Tom opened the door and she put Clover inside. Jasmine heaved an enormous sigh of relief as Tom shut the door.
âFinally!â he said. âBoth safe at last.â
âThatâs quite an achievement to catch two escaped rabbits,â said Mr Hobson. âEspecially one as lively as that Clover.â
âI hope she hasnât wrecked your lamp,â said Tom. He switched it on. âPhew, it still works.â
âRabbits love chewing electrical cables,â said Mr Hobson. âIn the wild, sometimes tree roots grow into their warrens, you see, so they learn to nibble them off as soon as they see them. And domestic rabbits still have that instinct. Cables look like tree roots to a rabbit.â
âOh, look!â said Jasmine, pointing to the carrier, where the rabbits were tentatively sniffing each other.
