“What a relief,” said Mr Hobson, when they told him the story. “I was starting to worry that he’d put you into a stew with the rabbit!”

Jasmine stroked Clover, who was sitting on her lap. She seemed none the worse for her adventures.

“Thank you for looking after Dandelion,” she said.

“I enjoyed it,” said Mr Hobson. “We had a nice chat, didn’t we, Dandelion?”

To Jasmine’s shock, Clover suddenly sprang off her lap and lolloped across the room.

“Come back, Clover,” said Jasmine, holding out a sprig of parsley. But Clover showed no interest in the food. Jasmine picked up the towel to drop over her, but as she drew closer, the rabbit skittered under the bed.

Mr Hobson laughed. “She’s a lively little thing, isn’t she? I think she’s got a taste for freedom.”

Jasmine peered under the bed and gasped in horror. “Clover, no!” she exclaimed. “Stop it! Oh, no, I can’t reach her.”

“What’s she doing?” asked Mr Hobson, as Tom looked under the bed too.

“Chewing electric wires!” cried Jasmine. “Stop it, Clover, you’ll electrocute yourself!”

But Clover carried on happily munching the plastic-coated lead of Mr Hobson’s bedside lamp.

“We’ll have to move the bed,” said Tom. They pulled the bed away from the wall and Jasmine threw herself across it and grabbed the rabbit. Clover squealed and kicked, but Jasmine kept a firm hold of her.

“Open the carrier, quick,” she said.

Tom opened the door and she put Clover inside. Jasmine heaved an enormous sigh of relief as Tom shut the door.

“Finally!” he said. “Both safe at last.”

“That’s quite an achievement to catch two escaped rabbits,” said Mr Hobson. “Especially one as lively as that Clover.”

“I hope she hasn’t wrecked your lamp,” said Tom. He switched it on. “Phew, it still works.”

“Rabbits love chewing electrical cables,” said Mr Hobson. “In the wild, sometimes tree roots grow into their warrens, you see, so they learn to nibble them off as soon as they see them. And domestic rabbits still have that instinct. Cables look like tree roots to a rabbit.”

“Oh, look!” said Jasmine, pointing to the carrier, where the rabbits were tentatively sniffing each other.
