CHAPTER TEN

HE THOUGHT she was beautiful?

She touched her lips, her steps faltering, staring up the hallway towards his office. She’d wanted to kiss the guy last night! Unbelievable! She was falling for her own romantic babble.

It had to be all in her head. He had Kasey. There wasn’t a chance in the world that he was thinking anything more about her than maybe as a friend or as a dinner companion and his proposal planner. She chewed her bottom lip.

But darn, she’d felt the connection last night vividly. Somehow, on some level they’d become closer, and crossed the line. How, she wasn’t sure.

So, she’d enjoyed his company last night. So, he’d been easy to talk to—too easy. She cringed. She’d said things to the guy she hadn’t confessed to her own mother. Should that make things so different between them now?

She took a couple of deep breaths. It didn’t matter.

They didn’t have much time left. Tara stiffened. Rick was only in her life for a short time. He could never be her friend…He was getting married to an heiress and she felt things deep in her body for him that a woman couldn’t feel for a man and just stay friends.

She wanted more, much more. So she’d have to find her own honest, arty tie-wearing, strong and challenging man. For now, she would just have to grin and bear his company as best she could without giving away how much he made her feel.

She strode the last few metres and knocked on his door jamb. The door was ajar, almost as though he was welcoming her…

He was bent over the papers on his desk, his fingers on his forehead, his thumb on his jaw, deep in concentration. His soft blue shirt was pushed up at the sleeves and his turquoise tie was loose and askew.

‘Hello,’ she said slowly, fighting the pull at her innards.

Rick looked up and smiled. ‘Hi.’

Her heart skipped a beat and her body warmed. She bit her bottom lip and looked over to the Sydney skyline. Her feelings for him had nothing to do with reason. ‘Is it a good time for me to—?’

Rick pulled at his tie, tightening the knot and centring it. ‘Absolutely. I’ve been…I thought it would never…The day seems like it’s dragged by.’

She nodded, her breath clogged in her throat. She walked slowly into his office, gripping her folder tightly to her chest, her heart thundering. ‘So, I’ve tentatively arranged your proposal with the restaurant for you,’ she rushed, trying to squash the rising heat in her veins. ‘And I’ve arranged the decorations for the back garden as we discussed.’ She flung open her folder. ‘And here’s the suggested menu for the night.’

Tara yanked out the printed menu she’d received earlier by fax from the restaurant, careful to hold the very end so she wouldn’t have to touch Rick at all.

She reduced the distance between them.

Rick took the page, glancing at it briefly. ‘Looks fine.’ He ran his gaze slowly over her, down over her new pink shirt and her white trouser suit to her pink pumps and up again to her face.
