As soon as Willa and Rome arrived at the hospital, Willa was ushered into a room and Rome was left to fill out some paperwork.

It didn’t take long for her door to reopen, and though she expected it to be either Rome or the nurse, it was Barry.

“What happened now, Willa?” he asked, concerned as he entered in the room.

Willa sat for a moment, not knowing what she should say, and realised that she had every right to be honest this time.

“Some vandal attacked the university, and I got caught in the cross-fire,” she explained, pointing to her shoulder.

“An attack? Oh my god, Willa. Were they arrested?”

“Yeah, he’s in custody, I believe,” she said, hoping the topic died off.

“Well, that’s a relief,” he said, still looking worried. “Let’s treat this wound.”

Willa nodded, unbuttoning her top and taking it off. Unlike around Rome, she wasn’t embarrassed. Barry was a doctor.

“This is going to hurt just a bit, but if you can make it through, I have a lollipop for you,” he said.

Willa looked at him strangely and let out a soft laugh. “You do realise I’m not that young?”

“I know. I just wanted to lighten your mood,” he said, getting some tweezers. “Hold onto my left hand and squeeze it if you feel the need to.”

“Right,” she said, taking his hand.

When she felt a sharp tugging, Willa winced, and despite what she had thought she would do, she grasped his hand.

“Are you okay?” he asked, pausing.

“Yeah, sorry, just surprised,” she said, gesturing for him to go on.

As if pulling out a splinter, he found each piece and extracted it efficiently. He did the same for another two shards, and Willa squeezed his hand each time.

“That seems to be all of it,” he said, turning around to grab some gauze.

Willa let go of his hand, and he looked back to reassure her as he continued her treatment. He covered up her wound after putting some ointment on and returned her shirt to her.

“Here you go,” he said, giving her a moment to button up.

“Thanks,” she said awkwardly, feeling his intense gaze. Fortunately, the ointment relaxed the pain.

“So, how are things going?” he asked, sitting back.

She laughed awkwardly. “Um, yeah, alright, I guess, all things considered.”

“I get what you mean, don’t worry,” he said.

“So, is this all good now?”

“Hmm?”

“My shoulder?”

“Oh, right, yes, that’s all fine. You’ll just need to come back in a week to get it checked and to make sure it’s not getting infected,” he said.

“Okay, sounds good. I better find Rome,” she said.

“You’re with Rome?”

“Yeah, he was at the incident, so he helped and drove me here,” she explained the connection.

“Right, well, I guess you better go then,” he said.

“Will do,” she smiled, standing up from her seat and walking towards the door.

“Willa?” Barry called.

She turned around. “Yes?”

“Would you have dinner with me sometime?” Barry asked.

Willa’s jaw dropped slightly, but she picked it up before he noticed.

“Well, I just think we’d enjoy ourselves,” Barry continued, sensing her hesitance.
