Chapter sixteen

CONNOR

We sat in silence for an awkward moment. Levi didn’t make a sound, didn’t move a muscle, he just stared at his cup of tea like he wished he could disappear inside it.

“So much happened these past couple of days, I don’t even know where to start. By the time I went up to the apartment yesterday, you were already asleep.”

“Sorry,” he mumbled.

He’d been riddled with guilt and shame when he told us what happened, and I hadn’t been able to come up with a single thing to say that would make everything better. It was almost funny how easily I doled out advice when anyone else had a problem, but this time I was as lost as any of them.

So I fell back on what I knew best and disappeared into the kitchen to whip up a bunch of random comfort foods. Which actually worked out okay since I was able to stock Levi's fridge once Royce told me they were going to make him live in the apartment above the tavern where everyone could keep a better eye on him.

My house had wards, but they weren’t as advanced as the wards on the tavern. And I might be a bear shifter, but there was no denying that I wasn’t a fighter. Not like the others, at least. So while it sucked that everyone insisted he would be safer somewhere else, it would be incredibly selfish to put Levi and Arie at risk because my house felt more like home when they were there.

“Can I ask a question?”

Levi’s brow crinkled in confusion, but he gave a subtle nod.

“Why didn’t you give the cops my name when I was the one who dragged you back to the tavern?” Levi sent so many mixed signals it was sometimes hard to figure out exactly where his head was. But I found myself maybe a little too eager for the answer.

His shoulders tensed like he was bracing himself for something, and I knew I wouldn't get the answer I was looking for. Disappointment settled in my gut as he looked away.

“Can you answer my question from earlier first?”

“The question about what shifters pick up when scenting people around them?”

“You already know what I smell like, so why continue to do it?”

I had a feeling he wasn’t going to like the answer, but it wouldn’t be fair to hide the truth from him.

“When people get angry or embarrassed or aroused, their body heats and it deepens their scent. When they are nervous or scared, the reaction is almost the opposite, they may even feel cold or shiver. Happy or content is a softer change, it’s hard to explain, but it’s more like a soft warmth, like sunshine. Sadness is heavier, also harder to explain, but the point is, yes, to a degree we can get an idea of mood or emotion from someone’s scent along with other factors such as how fast or hard your heart is pounding, changes in breath, sweating, flushed skin, and of course body language.
