CHAPTER 8

Cole wasn’t sure why he had to have her say it. It wasn’t like he didn’t know that was what the answer was, but a part of him needed it said out loud. Not just for himself, but for the whole room. Because he knew Victor probably wouldn’t have said anything about the pain in his ribs on his own. And if he’d noticed Victor was in pain, Cole was sure Marcus and Alpha Kincaid had too.

And sure, he’d planned on bringing it up if none of the others did, but what if Doc hadn’t come back before they’d left? Would he have remembered to follow up before the poison had spread to other parts of Victor’s body? Would they have been able remove all of it if it’d gotten to, say, his heart?

What if they hadn’t? What if his mate had died right after Cole had found him?

The thought was almost too much to bear, his chest tightening and his breaths turning shallow. He couldn’t hear what was being said over the buzzing in his ears; couldn’t feel Victor’s hand in his own, only the sweat accumulating on his temples and under his arms.

And then a strong hand was gripping his shoulder, bringing him back from the brink and anchoring him to the moment.

He glanced up and over his shoulder at his alpha, his rock in that moment. Alpha Kincaid’s eyes were full of compassion, but there was a little bit of fear there too.

He knew that Rick was wondering the same thing he was: what if they had all missed it?

“I’d like to wait for Doc to be finished in the other room,” Tashmica was saying, her tone brisk but not unkind. “We can do it right now in an examination room. I’m sure Doc wouldn’t mind giving you a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing.”

Victor shot him a nervous look, and Cole tried to smile reassuringly. He asked Tashmica, “What would you have to do to get it out?”

“Well.” Tashmica shot a glance at Cole, then refocused on Victor. “It sounds a lot scarier than it is, okay? What we’ll do is have Doc create a small incision right along your current scar, and then I’ll use magic to draw the wolfsbane out.”

Victor didn’t respond for a moment, but his fingers tightened a little where they were still entwined with Cole’s. He heard him swallow thickly.

“Okay. Let’s do it.”
