Chapter 10
I manage to sleep a few hours before waking up next to a drool puddle on Mayâs chest. She shifts underneath me, and I sit up slowly, allowing her to turn on her side. I rub my eyes and wince at how irritated they feel.
âYou really are a zombie,â May mumbles into a pillow. She yawns and stretches out her arms.
âIâm sorry. You can keep sleeping.â I watch as May blinks her eyes a couple of times and looks around the room.
âAt least the sun is out. I donât need sleep anyway.â She smiles at me and gives me a good morning kiss.
âEveryone needs sleep,â I say and kiss her back.
âApparently you donât.â May pulls me down on the bed, and we face each. She rubs her thumb along the corner of one of my eyes and offers me a small smile.
âGet some more rest. Iâm going downstairs to check on my mom.â I plant a kiss on Mayâs forehead and walk out of the room, closing the door behind me. The house is pretty cold, so I turn up the thermostat and look outside. Even though itâs early the clouds are bunched together in a light flurry.
I go to the kitchen and splash some cold water over my eyes and face. It wakes me up enough to hear my mother talking in the other room. I walk down the hall and open her bedroom door quietly. Sheâs still lying down and her blankets are twisted in a bunch at the bottom of her bed. I walk over to her slowly and gently touch her shoulder. She jumps at the contact and turns to me, her eyes wild.
âAutumn, you scared me,â she says, putting a hand to her chest. I smile slightly because my name came to her lips immediately, but she looks like she had a rough night.
âAre you okay?â I ask her, putting the back of my hand to her forehead. She feels pretty warm, and I can tell by the tissues lying around her nightstand that sheâs probably getting sick.
âIâm fine,â she says and purses her lips into a straight line. I look around the bed. Thereâs no phone or any device used to verbally communicate.
âWho were you talking to?â My mother looks away from me and pulls at the blankets.
âNo one,â she whispers. I grab the blankets off the bed and throw them on the floor. They need to be washed anyway and so do the sheets. Before my mother opens her mouth to protest I put a finger over her lips.
âYouâre getting a fever. You need to go upstairs and take a hot shower. Iâll change your bedding.â My voice is full of authority, and she doesnât question my commands. I watch as she drags herself out of the bed and through the door. Her sheets havenât been cleaned in a while, and I feel a little bad for not thinking to wash them before.
When she comes out of the shower I make up the couch with some clean linen and a wool blanket.
