Dangerous Lands

Sleep kept Miller in its embrace until morning. He awoke to find Chamise tight behind him, yet again. She had stayed awake as long as she could, and then surrendered to fatigue. Miller lay there for a long moment, enjoying the feel against his back. Finally, he pulled back his blanket. Chamise continued to sleep as he fed small branches into the dwindling fire. She must have just gotten to sleep. He checked on the horses, and then began cooking.

She woke just as he finished making breakfast. She sat up, grabbed the hard bread and scooped fried eggs from his small iron pan. Their conversation that morning focused on the trail ahead, and the prospect of finding a traveler’s inn a few days up the road.

“It will be four days until we reach the Shepherd Inn. It’s the closest,” she said.

Miller remembered an old stone inn nearby. “The Stone Inn is next. It’s only two days.”

“The Stone Inn burned down.”

“When? How long has it been since you were there? Plus, it was made of stone.” Miller had wanted to stay at the Stone Inn. It brought back memories of happier days traveling with Mistress Aileen and the rest of the old group.

“No idea. I heard it at the LaDeeDah. Some merchants were upset they had to sleep outside an extra night, so they spent a lot of time complaining. And the support beams were made of wood, fool.”

Miller cracked a grin. He had been trying to bait her into a debate, it hadn’t worked. “Life is hard all around, eh?”

They continued their playful banter as they saddled the horses and broke camp. The skies had darkened even more since yesterday. A low ceiling of dark clouds obscured the skies.
