âJade? We need to go. You have to get up now.â Lexâs instruction woke me.
âJust leave her. Theyâll get her if they want her,â Trixie responded in her usual snarky manner.
âEnough, Trixie.â
I was pretty sure that was Sophie, but her assertive tone wasnât something Iâd heard before. My eyes fluttered open until the blurry vision of Lex came into focus. She was squatting beside my bed, resting her hand on my shoulder. I inhaled deeply through my nose and stretched.
âWhatâs going on?â I asked.
âItâs our turn to go to the showers,â Sophie answered.
The bliss of escaping reality came to its end. We were getting prepared for the Season. I wondered if the other girls knew. Reactively, I decided I wasnât going to shower. My own form of protest. But as a chill resounded over my body, my mind turned to the cold, damp dress I wore. This might be my last shower, ever, and opportunity to change into dry clothes. Maybe Iâd get my old ones back finally and die looking like myself.
I sat up, seeing the guard at the open cell door waiting for us to comply. Lex made her way around my bed, encouraging me to join. Gravity amplified, every movement a tiring effort. I remembered the knife. Whether or not I could save myself, at least I could do some damage on my way out. I casually searched the space between the mattress and cot frame, grabbing the handle and timidly placing it under my dress in the back, like the first time.
Standing and gathering the little resolve that remained, I made my way around the bed, joining my friends. Lex and Sophie each escorted me, wrapping an arm around mine. They didnât know what I was going through or what had happened. Their kindness was thoughtful. I mightâve appreciated it if I wasnât aware we were walking to our deaths. I wanted to tell them, but that would probably be selfish. Maybe the most compassionate thing I could do would be to let them have as much time as possible without the certainty of knowing their fate.
We funneled through the hall, and I sensed Sophie perk up as we entered the kitchen. When her demeanor shrunk, I couldnât help but look. It wasnât Chef, or rather Lucan, preparing the food, it was someone else. This monster seemed stressed and struggling. Good. They should all feel suffering.
I hadnât realized that another guard escorted us to the showers until he spoke from behind, prodding us with his words like he was wrangling cattle.
âYou get five minutes. Fresh clothes and towels are in your stalls.â
âOkay, thank you,â Sophie responded.
The right side of my face twinged in anger. âDonât fucking thank them, Sophie.â I freed myself of their arms and went into a stall, closing the curtain behind me. A single tear fell with no warning, and pressure mounted in my lungs. Keep your shit together, Jade. I shook out my arms and stretched my neck before making my way to the shower setup.
