For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

HEBREWS 13:14

Your family may have some keepsakes handed down from past generations—items that remind you of life lived by a deceased relative. As hard as you try to imagine exactly what life was like for that person, you will never be able to actually have the experience.

Even your own life moves quickly and experiences vanish quickly. An item bought on vacation can never take you back to a full version of that experience. It is over and never coming back.

Life and its experiences keep passing by, and eventually we are gone and the next generation takes over. Scripture reminds us to keep our eyes, then, on “the city that is to come.” This life is just a blip in a much longer and fuller story than what we can see here.

When you make a beautiful sandcastle on the beach, you know the waves and wind will wash it away. But you build it anyway, and it’s fun. Then you build one again at the next opportunity. This is life. Impermanent, always changing, ever-evolving, beautiful. Preparing us for the city that is to come.

Practice Following the sitting practice guide on page 167, pay attention to the impermanent, ever-changing nature of your experience. Each breath is new, each physical sensation is constantly changing, and all of this is part of the journey toward God’s “city that is to come.”
