Catan had quickly flushed out and killed several partridge. What he really needed to do now was find a secluded spot. Finally, he found a tree that had slumped over, forming a kind of bower into which he could just fit. Sitting cross legged he pulled forth a black rock crystal from beneath his tunic. As he looked carefully into the crystal, Catan saw the blackness begin to move. Focusing on the moving dark mass, Catan forgot his cramped position and with the sounds of the forest retreating, everything was forgotten as the darkness enveloped him in its inky oblivion.

“You had better have a good reason for this!” A cold voice echoed in Catan’s mind.

“Of course! We do not travel across land to the clan of the Mother River, we are going around by sea” thought Catan bluntly, having no desire for a lengthy conversation.

“Just as well I had scouts out watching in all directions then, eh?” Catan felt a rummaging around in his mind, having been through this before he let it happen, he had nothing to hide or fear.

“Good. We will meet again soon.”

Alone in his mind once more, Catan unravelled himself from the bower, stretching out the kinks and retrieving the partridge, he set off back to the makeshift campsite. He had done his duty informing his brethren of the change in plans. The rest was up to him.
