Jacob’s people moved from Bethel to Ephrath (Bethlehem in modern Israel, B-5 in Figure 14.1 of Chapter 14). Rachel began to give birth to her second son in the middle of the journey and had a difficult labor. She named the child she gave birth to Ben-Oni[39], but Jacob later changed the name to Benjamin[40]. Rachel died there and Jacob buried her on the way to Ephrath. He set up a pillar over the tomb of Rachel.

Reuben Sleeps with Bilhah

Jacob moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder. While Jacob was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with Bilhah, Jacob’s concubine (refer to Figure 38.1 in Chapter 38), and Jacob heard of it. Reuben seemed to be awakened to sex in his early age, considering that Reuben gave the mandrakes to Leah, his mother (Chapter 30). This might have led him to become sexually promiscuous. This was mentioned in Jacob’s blessing of his sons before his death in Genesis Chapter 49 as “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father’s bed, onto my couch and defiled it (Genesis 49:1-2, NIV).”
