The Soccer Team

America is a country that loves sports, and that’s something that will never change. If you’re a fan of football, basketball, baseball or hockey, then you’re set to have something or someone to root for all year round.

​ Unfortunately, if you happen to be a fan of soccer, there’s not much to look forward to.

​ Sure, there’s plenty of matches happening all the time over in Europe and around the rest of the world, and thanks to the wonders of the internet, I rarely have any probably tuning in to support my favorite teams. But it’s just not the same as going to a game in person, rooting for a squad that represents for you and your home city.

​ In the United States, some of the larger metropolises have picked up their own major league soccer teams, but Portland isn’t one of those places, leaving me yet again without a club of my own to cheer for.

​ Even on a smaller scale, pick up games here are difficult to organize, and finding a place to play is even worse. I live across the street from a large public park, but half the time when I head over there to kick the ball around, I end up being turned away by the baseball practice that’s been scheduled months in advance.

​ Fortunately, I’m not alone in my disappointment, nor in my continued quest to bring soccer to Portland. I’ve been a big part of the online forums for locals who also want to kick the ball around, and through this I’ve managed to make a lot of close friends.

​ One such friend, an excitable guy by the name of Ken, seems to be the only one who got my message about switching fields today.

​ “Hey man,” I call out, strolling through the parking lot towards Ken and giving him a firm handshake, along with a pat on the back. “Anyone else ride with you?”

​ Ken shakes his head. “Sorry Jake,” he offers. “I don’t think anyone else saw your last minute change. I bet they’re all across town right now.”

​ Ironically, across town mean back where I started, at the park down the street from my house. After discovering it was in use today, I tried to reorganize with a new location for our weekly pick up game. Unfortunately, it appears I was too late.

​ I let out a long, frustrated sigh. It’s been so long since we’ve actually gotten a match going, and by now I wonder if I’m just cursed. Maybe I need to take up basketball or something, because this is getting ridiculous.

​ “We gonna wait around?” Ken questions. “I’ve got some time.”

​ I shake my head, giving up on today. “It’s gonna take them forever to get here, and by then we’ll probably just get chased off of this field, too.
