Chapter 5

As soon as Alan and Phoebe had left, Sue had apologized about the position I’d been put in.

I can’t say it was a comfortable conversation that Phoebe, Sue and I had, but at least none of us had made any commitments that would cause future problems.

Sue felt bad about how it all had all played out, and despite maybe having the right to feel the most aggrieved amongst our little trio of grown-ups, I spoke honestly to Sue, that the questions Phoebe had asked were almost certainly inevitable once I’d suggested that she and Alan talk to her daughter. That all three of us had maybe been a bit stupid in not anticipating the likely train of thought of a little girl who’d lost her mom. Who was being told that her beloved daddy had a ‘special lady friend’ who also just happened to be the mom of her favorite teacher.

“Last time I checked, honey, two and two still makes four, all day long,” I smiled ruefully.

Sue just smiled back, not needing to answer to let me know she agreed.

We were both tired and agreed that we did need to talk about the question that had come out of the mouth of a bright and persistent eight-year-old babe, but tonight wasn’t the night to discuss such things. Instead, we set ourselves a target of talking about it through the week, in the days when we’d not see Alan.

We actually started the discussion on Monday night, Alan’s normal Monday night visit cancelled at my request as I felt he and Sue had seen enough of each other over the weekend and that yours truly needed some quality time with his wife.

We’d just had a wonderful Chinese meal cooked by Sue as a thank you for the weekend I’d allowed her and we were snuggled up on sofa, Sue being the one to open the topic.

“Alan texted me earlier, apparently Phoebe’s already been nagging him, asking him if Uncle Pete has given him an answer yet,” she said.

“Why I am not surprised, kids of eight are hardly renowned for their patience. I’m surprised she lasted as long as this evening.”

“She’d didn’t … apparently she was even bugging him on the ride to school this morning.”

“Talking of which, is there any news of how school went, did any of the kids act mean to her?” I asked, genuinely interested, however complicated our life might have become, I didn’t want a little girl suffering for our choices.

“Both Alan and Daisy said it went fine, I guess most parents didn’t want to explain stuff like that to their kids, so unless they overheard something, the kids are all probably still in the dark. I guess if she was high school age, post puberty, it would be different, would mean more to the kids.”

“Well, at least that’s some good news then … but talking of Daisy, did she say how things were for her this morning? She must have got a few funny looks and comments from her colleagues and from some of the parents.
