Charis ran upstairs, pulled the bell for Mary, and once she arrived, changed into her best walking dress.

The maid picked pieces of wallpaper out of her hair, complaining as she brushed it. “If this is to be the state of your hair, miss, I suggest you wear some kind of cap and don’t take it off.”

“Excellent idea,” Charis replied. “Thank you for your help. I would be lost without you.”

She’d never had her own maid, and her hair was only attended to when she was going to an assembly or to a dinner. Even then, only by Bess, who had firm notions about what looked pretty, and only three different styles she knew how to achieve. All of which looked becoming on Mother, but not so much on Charis.

Mary, however, had a lovely touch, and Charis traipsed downstairs with a pretty knot of braids poking out from the sides of her bonnet.

She ran into the library and grabbed the watercolor she had created for Madame Le Favre, and then made her way to the front door, where Lord Ashcroft was waiting for her.

His curricle was out front, with a beautiful matching pair of gray horses with white socks. “These are different horses from our drive. They’re so pretty,” Charis said, unable to help herself. “Are they related? They look like twins.”

He laughed and handed her up into the carriage. “No, not related, although they do share bloodlines. I was very lucky to find them. May I introduce you to Pepper and Rudolph?”

“I shall have to take apples to them this afternoon when we return.” She settled onto the bench. “I must tell you I fully intend to enjoy this ride around to Covent Garden so I can watch you drive in real traffic. It’s not every day a spinster like me gets to sit next to a noted Corinthian. I hope many people see us.” She glanced at his astonished expression. “There, now I have embarrassed myself.”

He laughed and jumped up beside her. “I am not a Corinthian. Indeed, if you were to ask anyone, they should say I am a noted boorish bear.”

“Never say it.” She laughed because he was most likely right. He was very serious and took his responsibilities to heart. “I know who you are.”

He launched them smoothly into the traffic. “And who is that?”

“A man who entered parliament far too early, and sometimes finds it overwhelming and silly. He ends up playing many games he would not normally endure, and wonders if he’s making any difference, anyway. He is only just realizing he may be sacrificing the better part of his youth to this folly.”

He threw her an amused glance. “I was looking for more ‘handsome and intelligent.’ Goodness me, Miss Eastwood. It’s far too early in the day to look into my soul in such a way.”

He didn’t say she was wrong, though.

“Of course you are handsome. Any fool can see that.”

“Can they?” His bemused expression suggested he thought otherwise.

“Oh, hush. I’m not going to sit here and list your features.
