Chapter 21

-Ace-

Things had changed quite a bit at home these last few weeks. I was opening up more. I was not sure why, but I had joined the dinners more, and I was spending more time with the others. I found myself really wanting to, and while I found it almost a bit alerting that I had changed, I didn’t hate it. No, I liked it. I liked being with my family, because that was what they were, despite what I had said, they were my family, and I was glad to spend some time with them. It didn’t mean I had forgotten Nate. Not at all. The need to have him with me was only getting stronger and stronger. I could barely sleep or eat, so even though I joined the dinners, I didn’t really eat. Everyone saw how it was getting me down. They saw how bad I was feeling, but there was nothing they could really do. Everyone knew it was too dangerous to bring Nate into my life, and I only agreed. He was safer in the human world, but shit … I wanted him. I wanted him badly, and he constantly occupied my mind.

“Hey, Ace!”

I looked up, seeing Gabriel looking at me. He stood on the other side of the pool table, his arm around Valeri, who was smiling at me. I found it easier to be around both of them, now that I had found my mate. I didn’t feel the same anger or pain. No, now I could look at them without feeling like my heart was being ripped out of my chest.

“What?”

“Your turn,” he said.

“Oh.”

I nodded and then leaned over the table, before looking at Gabriel.

“I don’t know why you keep putting yourself into this embarrassing situation,” I said before I sent ball after ball into the holes, completely destroying him. “I mean, I am embarrassing you in front of your mate.”

Gabriel just cursed loudly, as the eight ball fell into the hole.

“Shit!” he said.

Valeri laughed and kissed his cheek, which made him turn all soft and he turned to smile at her before he looked at me.

“Rematch!”

“Sure, I don’t mind making you lose again,” I said.

“I am not going to lose!”

“Yeah, you are!” Lara shouted from over at the seating area, where she and Dominic were sitting getting very cozy with each other.

“I am just warming up!” Gabriel said.

I shook my head, as we got the game started again.

“Is that really what you are calling losing?” I asked.

“When did you get so mean?” he asked me.

“I was always mean,” I said as I began the game. “I have just been a bit out of my game lately.”

“But you are coming back,” Gabriel said.

It was not a question, and I smiled a little at him, as I completely destroyed him again. There was no reason for him to even concentrate on the game. He lost right away.

“Fuck!” he shouted.

“It is getting even more embarrassing every time you try to win,” I said.

“Again!”

“Maybe you should just stop,” Valeri said.
