D uring my first few days at the chateau, Blanchard kept me close at his side. I assumed he wanted to make sure I didnât get any ideas about escaping again, but the truth was, I didn't intend on it. Why would I run away when everything I wanted was right here? He offered me training and knowledge I would never be able to gain in the outside world. The opportunity to get to know his habits, and even the way he fought.
Three days in, he was evidently satisfied with the effects of his compulsion because he dropped me off at Echo's training room and left to do whatever the hell it was he did when he wasnât slaughtering entire families of werewolves.
For her part, the guard put me through the ringer and clearly took great pleasure in doing it. While the others were paired off, I had to stick with her, and while I could grudgingly acknowledge she was using kid gloves, that hadnât stopped her from beating the shit out of me.
At the end of each night, when I got done with training and the butler deposited me back in Blanchard's suite, I was too exhausted to even think of running if I wanted to. It took all the energy I had just to get into the shower and pour myself onto the sofa.
Usually, I was asleep before Blanchard got back, soundly enough that his entrances never woke me.
I wasnât even sure what he was doing all night. Sometimes, when I woke up in the middle of the day, he would be at the kitchen table, typing away on his laptop. It was bizarre to see someone who looked like he'd stepped out of an old painting using such modern technology, but I figured he took a more active role in his company than it had originally seemed.
Worse than the fact that I went to bed each morning bruised and so sore I could hardly sit up straight was the fact that I didnât want to be sleeping downstairs at all. After that first night, the temptation to go upstairs and crawl into Blanchard's nest had been stronger than ever.
It wasnât even like I could ask anyone what was wrong with me. Something told me Echo wouldâve laughed her ass off, and on the few occasions Lucy would even acknowledge my presence, she certainly wasnât much of a conversationalist.
As much as I hated to admit it, I found myself looking forward to Blanchard coming home. At least he spoke to me.
One night, before he could leave, I stopped him at the door. âWait.â
He turned around to face me, a curious glint in his eyes. âYes?â
âIâve been here for two weeks now,â I informed him.
He blinked slowly, as if he didnât understand my meaning. âYes. You have.â
âYou promised you would train me,â I said pointedly. âSo far, you just drop me off at vampire daycare and I donât even see you the rest of the night.â
He tilted his head. âYou're still learning the basics,â he finally answered.
