As soon as the door shut, Rose retrieved the stick. She peered at it. “Two positives.” She spun to Erica, wiping her eyes and covered her mouth. “You’re pregnant.” Both women looked at each other, and Rose shrieked, “Congratulations!” She held Erica away. “You’re excited, aren’t you? I mean, you were crying.…”

“Yes, I’m ecstatic, in fact.” Erica blinked and nodded vigorously, blowing her nose with a tissue. “I’m overjoyed. I just found out before you walked in. I got overwhelmed, and that’s why I was crying. I didn’t have the chance to explain before Jim entered. When I tell him, I want it to be special. I wasn’t…ready now.”

She gripped Rose and shook her. “Pinch me! I mean, we prayed for so long I thought it wouldn’t happen. I can’t believe it. I’m going to be a mom. I’m so happy.” She placed a hand on her belly and rubbed it. “I wonder how far along I am?”

Rose put the stick aside. “There is a doctor in residence you can consult with unless you’d rather you did so back in Washington DC.” She shrugged. “Your preference.” She hugged Erica again and stood to fetch the tray of food. “Now, Jim would not hear that you refused to eat.” She settled the tray on Erica’s lap. “Remember you’re eating for two now. I can hardly believe you’re going to be parents, finally. Jim will be so happy.”

Erica accepted the tray and adjusted it to balance it on both legs. “He will. We literally discussed it last week. We agreed that it would happen in God’s time and, that if it didn’t happen, we’d trust God and stay at peace. I guess now is His time.”

She and Rose held hands without thinking and closed their eyes. Rose chuckled. This was how they prayed on Rose’s wedding day. Erica’s prayer for her had been so thoughtful and so kind. Now, it was her turn to return the favor. “Father, we come before You. We thank You for Erica’s pregnancy. We thank You for this beautiful gift. Please make it go smoothly and help her during the delivery when the time comes. Teach us to be grateful even if bumps come along the way, but please make this a safe and joyful pregnancy in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.”

“Amen,” Erica echoed. She peered at the food as Rose swung her feet onto the bed and started telling Erica about her stalker while she ate. When she finished, Erica was halfway through her oatmeal. “I didn’t realize I was starving. I’m so blessed to have such a thoughtful husband.”

Rose leaned up. “You sure it’s not the fellow you’re side-feeding that’s made you feel starved?”

Erica’s fork stopped midair. She turned to Rose, and they both started laughing. Erica pointed with her fork. “You could be right, you know. Goodness, I don’t want to overeat and become obese before another month comes.”

They broke into another round of laughter just as the door opened a crack and Jim strode in.
