Iâve made reservations for brunch at Perryâs. Eleven thirty. Wear
something nice.
Simon frowned and put the phone back in his pocket. He would say
he almost dreaded going out to see his Mother on Sunday, but he
completely dreaded it. Nothing, it seemed, would deter her from getting
him and some poor unsuspecting girl to the chapel.
âTrouble?â Julian asked and popped a fry into his mouth.
âMy mother is trying to marry me off. I have to do brunch with her
and one of her prospects on Sunday.â Simon shrugged and grabbed a few
fries of his own. It wouldnât help to dwell on it right then. Heâd get
through the brunch, as he always did. One day she would wear him down,
but that day hadnât come yet.
âYouâre thinking theyâd have a hard time with you being gay?â
âYeah.â The lump stuck in Simonâs throat had nothing to do with
wings or fries. He finished off his beer and signaled for the waitress to bring him another. He didnât want to think about his mother right then. âIf I lose them, Iâll be alone.â
Julian reached over and put an unsteady hand on Simonâs thigh, a
little too high for polite company, but the warmth of it through his jeans sent a shiver racing up his spine. He glanced up into Julianâs eyes and
found compassion through the haze of beer.
âTheyâre your family. You wonât lose them. They may be upset and
not agree with you, but youâre their son. Trust me when I tell you that
theyâd die for you.â A tear welled up in Julianâs eye, and he brushed it away. âBut you can have your family and still be alone.â
âAre you alone?â Simon asked quietly, unable to stop the question
from slipping through his alcohol-loosened lips. The hand slid from his
thigh, and Julian sat up a little straighter.
âI was. I was alone for a long time. Now, I have Robbie.â Julian
drank from his glass and then went back to the forgotten sandwich in the basket before him. Heâd picked up the wrap when something struck him,
and he spoke again.
âI mean, I did the right thing by breaking up with him. All he wanted
was my money. He slept with other guys, stole from me, and treated me
like I was the most precious thing in the world to him so I wouldnât figure it out. Itâs sick that I still miss him even after five years of having him out A Heart for Robbie

of my life. Especially now, when Iâm so fucking scared all the time, and no one else understands that gnawing fear that pierces my soul.â
Simon stared. It was the most personal thing Julian had ever told
him, and sick as it seemed, he wanted to know more. He asked the first
question that came to mind, though not the most pertinent.
âDid he steal a lot from you?â
âAbout twenty-five grand.â
âJesus, is he in jail?â
âNo. I was stupid, and I loved him. As long as he doesnât come
around me again, I consider it a life lesson. I do miss the sex, though.
Kenny was a hot little bottom.
